It's not just deadline deals. I would say it' can be some combination of all of the following:

1. Guys coming back from injury
2. Softer schedule down the stretch
3. Veterans and late starters getting into their groove
4. Team more focused
5. Trade Deadline pickups
6. Rookies coming up

Non of this supports the rational that waiting until the deadline to build a team capable of competing makes any sense. The better the team is on day one, the better your chances of winning are. It's not like they all of a sudden start counting each win as 1.5 after the deadline. If they finish two games out? Those two games could have easily been made up early in the season when they ran a flawed roster out there. I just don't understand the mindset of baseball fans and the BS of "it's early". In just about every single damn season we have missed the playoffs by a game or two, this fan base spent the majority of the Spring saying it's early. It wasn't, the season starts day one, not after the All Star Break, or when the weather heats up, or after the deadline, or after the Non Waiver deadline. It starts day one, and I doubt there is a freaking fan or media base in all of sports that uses the phrase "it's early" more than the Mariners.

This year Speier and Buzardo have been good but Trent, Vargas, etc have not been good this year.

Last year Raley was a 131 OPS+ guy. This year he has largely been injured. = We need Naylor

Last year Polo was a 2B with a 93 OPS+. This year he was supposed to be a 3B but that went away and now he is a DH with a 122 OPS+ but has played 3/5 games at 2B.

Robles got hurt and then we went to Leody, Moore, Miles, Raley, and eventually we brought up Canzone . Canzone was shit last year.


Every single year there is shit that you were counting on that falls by the waste side: Last year we had the #1 starters in all of baseball and wanted to toss Luis for a bat. Now, he's our #2 best starter by WAR and we would be lost without him.

Not necessarily. Trade deadline pickup is often just a few months of a massively influential piece. You might not be able to get that piece if you already traded your prospects in the offseason.

Signing an FA in the offseason would not jeopardize your trade deadline activity, though. FA is purely just cash.

I don't have any problems with the Mariners signing FAs except for the understanding that they will cap spending so you don't want an albatross contract weighing the team down. But, otherwise I don't care what they spend. Why would I?

Completely agree except I don't think you can include Cal in there as someone who hasn't done their part. He's been carrying the team on his shoulders the entire season despite being pitched around the majority of the time.

I hate Jerry, and I hate Stanton even more. But that being said, no one can complain about them not doing their part and making an effort this trade deadline. As you said, now it's up to the players to step up and start putting forth a little more effort. And it wouldn't hurt for Wilson to start holding some these guys accountable as well. I get the impression he's a little too buddy buddy with them and that's never a good thing.
