Yeah, cano is constantly pointed at as a cautionary tale for not signing high priced FA's when the fact is he was a terrific addition much of his mariner career. The issue was there wasn't really a reason to sign him in the first place.

We barely missed the playoffs with him in 2014, 2016 and 2018 because we had idiot GMs. Btw my eyes are going. Could you please tell me what our winning % were in the years???? Certainly couldn't be an average of 54% could it?? That sure would be wild

Wow a .539 Average winning % those three seasons and didn't make the playoffs once. And in 2016 and 2018 when Jerry was GM it was EXACTLY 54%! I wonder dumb fuck bothered to look at those two seasons before coming up with the idiotic 54% Speech.

He never said 54% was the goal for an individual season or that it would be a good enough winning % to make the playoffs. It was about having a 54% over an extended period of time so it could mean 48% one season and 60% the next and so on. I think it's a stupid goal because it was an attempt to take the focus off the near term and any efforts being made to immediately improve the team.

It was never clear to me why he brought it up in the first place. I don't believe he stated it as a goal, it was more a statistical curiosity, teams that averaged a 54% winning percentage over a decade make the playoffs and have a decent chance of making a WS. Its funny how its become this raging debate for years now. Seems to be more controversial than anything trump has come up with

He was trying to justify not going for it. He was prioritizing sustainability over winning a WS. Because typically businesses want consistent predictable revenue streams. The don't believe that owning a MLB team is any different than owning any other business. Stanton is on record as saying that.

Most underated position player is Robinson Cano. The way he went out left a bad taste in everyone's mouth but he was extremely productive while in Seattle. Despite only being here 5 years He is 6th on the Franchise bWAR leader board for position players ahead of revered guys like Buhner, Davis, Cameron and Olerud. The guys ahead of him are 4 HOF Caliber players and Kyle Seager who had an 11 year career.

Most underrated pitcher is Mike Moore. There is a clear top five for M's pitchers consisting of Felix, Moyer, Randy, Garcia and Langston. Mike Moore 6th in Wins behind those 5 and ranks 4th in Innings and fWAR ahead of Langston and Garcia.

Most overrated position player is Dan Wilson. He is in the M's Hall of fame but his numbers were very mediocre especially for the Steroid era. among all the hitters in franchise history he is 17th in fWAR only one win ahead of Zunino. He is 35th in Batting average, 20th in HR and 54th in OPS smack dab in the middle between Dylan Moore and Jeffrey Leonard.

Most overrated pitcher is Chris Bosio He had a bit of a cult hero status which was helped out by his no hitter. I think he is thought of fondly by many Mariners fans but over all he was really pretty bad. He was 27-31 with a 4.43 ERA for the M's and Just 5.8 WAR in 4 years.
Dan Wilson was always Lou piniella's guy. He wanted him from when he hired on as manager, I think Lou feels it worked out pretty well. Not sure how to rate Wilson, he's your leadership glue guy as opposed to slash line guy. For all the criticism he get for his managing Lou always felt he make a great manager.
“I told the Mariner organization eight years ago, ‘If I owned the team and I had anything to do with it, Danny Wilson would be my manager,”

Most underrated Position player: Beltre. Is generally considered a bit of a bust as a FA signing but he put up 21.2 WAR in 5 seasons. Average of 4.2 person season. Double the average player.

Most underrated Pitcher: Freddy Garcia. Put up 18.6 WAR a sub 4 ERA and went 76-50 during the roids era.

Most Overrated Position Player: Mark Mclemore. He was hailed as a hero and the perfect Super Utility player but he really just had the one good season in 2001 with 3.5 WAR. Only 5.8 WAR in 4 seasons. Less that 2 WAR per season and only 2.3 WAR in those other three seasons combined.

Most Overrated Pitcher: Glenn Abbot. He was considered the Ace and Anchor of the Rotation for the first 7 years in franchise history but he was bad. 46-63 with a 4.41 ERA and only 5.7 WAR in 6 seasons. He missed all of 1982. Can't even remember why. lol

My most underrated player is Tino Martinez. In '95, he finally figured out ML pitching and almost doubled his RBI total to 115. He was the Mariner left handed power when Junior was out. He got good and the M's traded him to the Yankees for 2 of their massively overvalued prospects in Russ Davis and Sterling Hitchcock. Tino was really good the next 4 years for the Yanks.

My most overrated player is former #1 pick Al "Choo-Choo" Chambers. M's went cheap($60k) to get him. It was a relatively weak draft but they could have got Andy Van Slyke to roam CF for about the same money. He was a light hitting minor leaguer who got hot in AAA so the M's brought him up and he failed miserably to the tune of -.5 WAR fir his career He was out of baseball by 27.

My most under appreciated Mariner Minor Leaguer is David Arias aka David Ortz. As a 18-year-old in 1992, he hit about .260 with no power in the Rookie league. As a 19-year-old, he had a .960 OPS and moved up and had 1.75 more seasons of .900+ OPS before trading him to Minnesota for David Hollins who actually hit great, .916 OPS for 28games, for the M's in Sept but then was let go because he would make too much money. Ortiz was a great hitter who ended up pounding 500+home runs most of them for the Red Sox
