Does anybody agree with me that the elimination in 2001 after winning 116 games, was more devastating?
Our expectations were obviously greater.
We thought we were invincible.

No, because 9/11 happened just before the playoffs and that's where most if not all of us allocated our sorrows. Of course we were definitely bummed by the Mariners flattening out in the playoffs and not even really bothering to show up for the ALCS, but the timing of what happened gave it probably a more numbing feel as opposed to the total gut punch we just took a week ago.
Really unfair though that the Yankees had such a huge emotional advantage, like the Angels did the day after Taylor Skaggs OD'd and they not only beat us 13-0 but we also got no-hit by two dogshit pitchers. Games like that shouldn't even count.

Maybe because I was younger, September 11th was a big event, but it wasn't as impactful on me in my youth.
2001 was an awesome season, but as far as let downs... I think it was the biggest. It's quite frankly the best team put together in any sport in Seattle history.
The 2025 Mariners were far from the best team they've put forward. Hell, they were lucky to get by the Tigers.

Maybe if you just compare our teams across the different eras, but not in comparison to the rest of the League. Our lineup was better than anyone in the AL besides Toronto, and that is a big reason we lost. The 2001 was damn good, but the rotation, IMO, just wasn't good enough. Back then teams with guys like Pedro, Schilling and Clemens won rings. Freddie was not in that class....as he showed by losing game one of the ALDS and putting us in a position to have to play five games.Seattle or Bust wrote: ↑Mon Oct 27, 2025 10:22 pmMaybe because I was younger, September 11th was a big event, but it wasn't as impactful on me in my youth.

At that time I was naive and optimistic 22 year old. We had been in the playoffs 4 out of the last 7 years. I was disappointed for sure but I also thought we would have a lot more bites at the apple with that team. If I had known at the time that I would be in my mid 40's before the team won the division again it would have been a lot more disappointing. The agony of these last 24 years made this one sting a lot more to me.

I disagree. The 1993-1994 and 1995-96 Sonics were the best team ever put together in Seattle Sports history. Finished 63-19 and 64-18 - just imagine that.Seattle or Bust wrote: ↑Mon Oct 27, 2025 10:22 pmMaybe because I was younger, September 11th was a big event, but it wasn't as impactful on me in my youth.

Shawn Kemp, Gary Patyon, Nate McMillian, Detlef Schempf, Ricky Pierce, Sam Perkins, Kendall Gill, Michael Cage, Vincent Askew, Hersey Hawkins.
Had the fluke Denver Nuggets not went apeshit and won game 5 in Seattle in 1994, we would have won the whole thing, especially considering Jordan was retired. That Denver Nuggets loss was the hardest hit sports moment in my youth. Devastated me.
