I think the World Series thread devolving into a discussion about freaking soccer after we barely missed going to the World Series might be the lowest point in the history of this forum! LOL

I understand the principle involved. They are the same offside role in hockey. But at least in hockey, they have a hard line on the ice where you can clearly see whether the buck or the offensive player crosses first.
Your original soccer league, the NASL tried it in the 70s/80s with a strict 35 yard offside line. I think it had an indifferent effect.

In soccer there is also a degree of subjectivity built in. Determining when a player illegally impacts the game is a judgement call, not a black-and-white rule, which leads to varying decisions depending on the specific referee and situation.

So when I watch soccer and I ask “why was that offside” or “ why was that NOT offside” I can never get a clear answer.
Yeah, very messy. You should be either offside or not. But goals used to get chalked off just because someone had just moved into a slight offside position nowhere near the action.

Only help I can give is standing offside now only gets penalised if the player was doing something that affects the play.

But the Defenders could play man-to-man coverage on the Cherry Pickers and it would still be challenging to score right am I missing something?
I suppose. But instinct says the offside rule dictates the whole tactical structure. Just as in the NFL if the attacking team could run past the line of scrimmage before the snap you would have chaos all over the field, wouldn't you?

Agreed. Although, at least we've not gone full Godwin's Law yet.

For D-T's sanity and trying to get back to topic - can't see how any neutral would root for the Dodgers.

At least there was some satisfaction in how the Bluejays were just 2 outs away and blew it. That has to be a lot more painful than being 8 outs away from getting to the WS and blowing it (thanks Dan). They came into the league the same year as the Mariners and have been to 3 World Series and won two of them. Fuck them, fuck their woke bitch fans, fuck George Springer and fuck Canada.

They were leading 4-3 with 1 out in the 9th. So they were even closer, 2 outs away. If that adds to your joy.

I'm guessing from the tone there isn't specific rooting FOR the Dodgers, just rooting against Toronto 8-)

I'm not sure that is a good analogy. Soccer isn't broken down into "plays" with a stoppage of action between each built into the game. To me, the soccer offsides is more like not allowing receivers to get behind the defense with the ball in the air.

I admit however i'm not that familiar with soccer rules, and didn't understand what you were saying about "goal hanging" but why couldn't that be addressed with a separate rule?
