Actually nobody cared until he signed with the Red Sox, here's a couple of articles about him then. Polanco signed with the Mets, Refsnyder in my mind is half a Polanco. I see no reason to believe that Refsnyder won't be as productive as Polanco from the right side this season. That's all you need, they have left handed hitters to complete the platoon. I think it's a perfectly reasonable way to address DH.

Platoon DH... PFFFFFT.
Such retards that run this team.
Re: Adam Jude is officially the new PR guy for the M's
The Refsnyder comps with Pollock in terms of age are scary but one significant difference is the Ref is used to being a platoon bat that only starts vs. LH starters whereas Pollock was an everyday player that happened to hit LHPs well the season before we signed him. Also we needed a RH bench bat to PH for the wimpy LH hitters in later innings. We didn't have that this season.
If we knew Brennen Davis was going to come in and hit absolute mortars this Spring then I agree wasting 6M on Ref would have been totally redundant.

He only got about 1/3 of his plate appearances as a DH last season. He hit best as a right fielder. Ok, that alone isn't the end of the world.D-train wrote: ↑Tue Mar 10, 2026 5:21 pmThe Refsnyder comps with Pollock in terms of age are scary but one significant difference is the Ref is used to being a platoon bat that only starts vs. LH starters whereas Pollock was an everyday player that happened to hit LHPs well the season before we signed him. But as a pinch hitter last season he had a .488 OPS. Because they're obviously just going to bring in a right handed pitcher to face him whenever possible.
He got over 1/3 of his plate appearances against RHP last season. It seems pretty obvious the Mariners will try and pull him against righties whenever possible to avoid his .616 OPS vs. righties.
On paper that works in his favor, but in reality, you start getting jerked around, your numbers suffer overall. We've seen it time after time with the Mariners platoon shenanigans.
I hope you guys are right, but I think Refsnyder will have a sub-.700 OPS.
His salary would've paid for Yoan Moncada at 3B. Or half of Luis Arraez at 2B. Crazy to me.
Re: Adam Jude is officially the new PR guy for the M's
Moncada at 3B and Donovan at 2B would have been better but they have to give there minimum wage prospect guys "Runway" to keep their penny pinching Model rolling....I swear if I hear the word Runway again I will puke yet Jude just parrots it like the bought and paid for bitch that he is.

You are not using anybody as a 100% DH, Refsnyder can have multiple roles as a right handed bat, and the left handed complement is any number of possibilities with Canzone being the most likely. Creating your roster in a way that can take advantage of platoon advantages only makes sense to me. I don't give a crap who is dhing, what I care about is the WAR the position delivers.bpj wrote: ↑Tue Mar 10, 2026 4:21 pmI don't find it reasonable to waste two spots on a DH, no.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Mon Mar 09, 2026 6:51 pmActually nobody cared until he signed with the Red Sox, here's a couple of articles about him then. Yes, I absolutely would find someone to DH.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Tue Mar 10, 2026 9:42 pmYou are not using anybody as a 100% DH, Refsnyder can have multiple roles as a right handed bat, and the left handed complement is any number of possibilities with Canzone being the most likely. I just wouldn't have waited until we're finally a contender like Dipoto's dumbass has when there aren't any on the market.
Schwarber was my top target in my offseason plan about 5 years ago, for example.
Refsnyder can fill multiple roles in the same way that AJ Pollock and Mitch Garver did. Inadequately, all around.
Creating your roster in a way where you don't have to rely on platoons, at all, makes sense to me.
I don't care what WAR the DH position delivers in this case, because it comes at a cost.
When Cal's at DH, we suffer with a terrible bat at catcher. When Jorge Polanco was at DH, we had no 2B/3B. When Julio or Randy DH, we end up with a downgrade in the outfield, and so on.
Nah, there really isn't a scenario where a platoon, especially at DH, is a positive thing.

Yeah, it comes at a cost, a guy like Schwarber or Ortani are expensive. The list of guys that can really deliver from both sides of the plate is short, polanco can do it and he got $20 MIL. I don't understand the waste of a roster spot argument, for me it's what the bench is for. I agree with LL, being willing to spend $6 MIL on a bench bat was Dipoto being serious about contending. When I saw the signing I was impressed by it.
To be clear, the Mariners aren’t projected to be bad against lefties. Rodríguez, Raleigh, Arozarena and now Refsnyder are a competitive group on their own. Even with the handedness concerns, the Mariners are still projected 10th in MLB with a 106 wRC+ against lefties. That’s a bit worse than their projected 114 wRC+ against righties (second only to the Dodgers’ extraordinary mark of 121), but it’s still enough to make them one of the top lineups in MLB. That’s to say, Mariners’ weaknesses at this point are relatively minor; “handedness” is the type of thing only great teams get to worry about.
While Refsnyder doesn’t quite move the needle, he’s not really meant to. His inclusion on this roster is a sign the Mariners are serious about contending in 2026. He’s spent a decade desperate to get better anyway he can. It seems the Mariners are finally on board.
Re: Adam Jude is officially the new PR guy for the M's
Funny, because we've complained about him spending $6M at a time on useless players since year one with Dipoto when he filled the precious available roster spots with Nori Aoki and Wade Miley.
His downfall has always been spreading $30M around on 5 or 6 bums per year instead of adding one Schwarber.
And his bums almost always fail, shocker.
Recently, Adam Frazier, AJ Pollock, Tommy La Stellaaaaaa, Kolten Wong, Mitch Garver.
His picks have been horrendous.
But, yeah, Refsnyder, I'm sure he's the one! Lol.

Well I prefer that to bums like Anthony Rendon and Kris Bryant. At this point I think he's cobbled together a pretty good lineup while avoiding those sorts of mistakes. We shall see if Refsnyfer is a valuable addition or notbpj wrote: ↑Tue Mar 10, 2026 11:34 pmFunny, because we've complained about him spending $6M at a time on useless players since year one with Dipoto when he filled the precious available roster spots with Nori Aoki and Wade Miley.
