Tuesday July 7th Game thread No. 92
Pre series thoughts: The next two road series are against the hottest team in baseball over the past six weeks (Miami) and the Tampa Bay Rays who have overtaken the Yankees to lead the AL east. We are underdogs in both cities.
The Marlins have won 8 of their last 11 games, They are 23 and 8 since June 1st and just swept the Athletics 12-5, 7-2, and 9-8. They will give their high-powered offense a day off waiting for the Mariners to come into town. The Mariners just allowed the Blue Jays only 2 runs over 3 games so their pitching looks stellar. Whether or not the M's have indeed plugged all their pitching leaks will be evident. These last two teams (Miami Marlins & Tampa Bay Rays) before the All Star Break will test the M's vigorously.
The Marlins have had an unrelenting offense lately. Otto Lopez, leadoff hitter leads the National League .341 and 38 multi hit games. He has gone without a hit only 3 times this year. As a team, Miami hit over .300 in the series, over 1.000 OPS, averaging over nine runs per game. I believe the pitching in Miami will be the following: July 7th Brian Woo vs Max Meyer, July 8th George Kirby vs TBA, July 9th Bryce Miller vs Tyler Phillips. Pretty sure we won't be facing Sandy Sandy Alcantara or Eury Perez in this series, They just pitched.
The Marlins have had one of the most prolific and potent offenses in the Majors over the past six weeks. It's an offense I like. From the first inning on, they are adept at working counts, they make continual contact, driving up the pitch counts and wearing the starter down. If the M's have a good road trip, it will be because the Mariners pitchers live up to their preseason expectations. They've done it against the Blue Jays. Hoping to outhit the Marlins seems like poor strategy. I think we have to shut the Marlins down to win. Let's see what happens.

It’s amazing how many guys in the last year of their contract have great seasons, then sign a monster contract, and suck the rest of the way.
That’s what will happen with Randy.

Interesting stat... since 6/20 the M's are the best fWAR pitching team in baseball.
They also lead all of baseball in fastball velocity by almost a full MPH at 96.5.
They also lead all of MLB In FIP by almost a full run during this span.
They also are allowing a miniscule .37 homeruns per 9 during this run. Well less than any other teams.
And now for the weird one... the Cubs as a staff finished dead last at -0.7fWAR but 10-4 overall for the best record in baseball

Good assessment. Who was that said, "Good pitching will beat good hitting any day"?AT Fresno wrote: ↑Mon Jul 06, 2026 12:28 pmPre series thoughts: The next two road series are against the hottest team in baseball over the past six weeks (Miami) and the Tampa Bay Rays who have overtaken the Yankees to lead the AL east. Re: Tuesday July 7th Game thread No. 92
I seriously contemplated booking this week for a trip to Florida. I looked into it months and months ago.
Florida flights are the cheapest route into the US from the UK. There are 6 Mariners games and the World Cup Quarter Final in Miami on Saturday - which is now England v Norway.
Would have been a dream week for me.
Go M's - and keep the streak going Terry. One or two more wins would be quite a feat.

Thanks Mike. I'd love to have made that trip myself. I have a weakness for Cuban food and stone crab. We aren't supposed to win this week, but I'm hoping the Mariners fool the experts.mostonmike wrote: ↑Tue Jul 07, 2026 5:47 pmI seriously contemplated booking this week for a trip to Florida. What is the World Cup. Some sort of beach volley ball extravaganza? I'm in!mostonmike wrote: ↑Tue Jul 07, 2026 5:47 pmI seriously contemplated booking this week for a trip to Florida. I looked into it months and months ago.

Cal and Naylor will have impact this week. Dom & Luke will barrel if Mariner management permits them to play. Mariner pitching will work out well. Close games, but 4+ wins could happen going to the break.

So did that medium dumper pic I posted make you think of Cal and Naylor? lol
