Would the Mariners trade Luis Castillo to the Mets for the right-handed bat of Luis Robert Jr. just to save money? Could the Mets throw in a reliever? Would the Mets even be interested?

Robert, who turns 29 years old on the trade deadline, has a 2026 salary of $20 million with a $2 million buyout of a $20 million club option for 2027. Castillo has salaries of $24.15 million in 2026 and 2027 with a $25 million vesting option for 2028.

The Mets have expensive relievers in Devin Williams ($2 million through 2028), Luke Weaver ($9.5 million in 2026 and $12.5 million in 2027) and A.J. Minter ($11 million). Brooks Raley ($4.4 million) and Huascar Brazoban ($1.05 million) are less expensive options.

Robert is rehabbing in the minors after being placed on the 60-day IL with a lumbar spine disc herniation. Robert's production has cratered since posting 11.2 bWAR in 311 games over his age 23-25 seasons in 2021-23.

.911 OPS vs left handed pitching. .873 for his career.

If he's healthy, I'd make him our platoon bat vs lefties if it means it's a 1 for 1 for Castillo.
