See, this is why ERA isn't nearly as accurate a reflection of a reliever's performance as it is for a starter. Brennan gave up two runs without getting an out and Gearrin comes in with two runners on. It's reasonable to expect one of the inherited runners to score, but Gearrin allows both to score. Gearrin leaves with one out and runners on first and second. Biddle comes in and it is within reason to expect him to be able to get out of the inning with no further damage. Nope, he allows both to score. So while Brennan and Gearrin pitched poorly, the ensuing pitchers helped kill their ERAs. Meanwhile Biddle, who also didn't get the job done, gets out of it with an improved ERA.
