I think he grasps the economics. If the Giants picked up half the contract it's a pretty good deal. Then you need like 6-7 WAR out of him, that's not an outrageous amount. It's the kind of move a truly contending team can make. The question is who are you trading for that? Mostly what it's about is he needs something to talk about everyday just like us.
It still wouldn't be a good deal because you'd be stuck with a declining player on your roster for the next four years. It's possible you can get 6-7 WAR out of him, but that's probably the upside.

As for Brock, I'm not saying he doesn't consciously grasp the economics. It's more of a mentality thing. Football is very much about the current season and maybe a little bit about the following year whereas baseball teams tend to have a much longer term perspective. That's most teams, not just the Mariners. My guess is that at a gut level, Brock just doesn't really understand that. It doesn't compute for him.

If a team was on the cusp of a WS and felt a 3rd baseman could be the difference, picking up Chapman for $50 mil would be tempting. Would that make it a good deal? I'm saying the Giants aren't picking up half of the rest of his contract just so he can win a WS for another team to begin with

They're going to have three players capable of being starters on the left side of the infield. Why in the hell would they add a fourth being paid significant dollars even if the Giants pay half his salary? Talk about waste of money.

How about trading Donovan for an actual 3rd baseman. Package him with Castillo if necessary.

Mets GM: (busts up laughing and hangs up the phone)
Giants GM: (busts up laughing and hangs up the phone)
Cubs GM: (busts up laughing and hangs up the phone)
Phillies GM: (at first thinks it's a prank call, then calmly agrees to the trade, slowly hangs up the phone, looks at his assistant GM and then after a long pause busts up laughing)

Sorry SH, but that was an SoB-caliber fan trade idea. :D

I was asked for names so I gave some. DT seemed to think they are all garbage bats so I'm not sure why they would be off limits for such a trade.

How about make it Kirby rather than Castillo. I would suggest JP rather than Donovan but I realize he's untradable due to his cool hair.

That's better, but I doubt that the Mets are going to give up on Bichette this early, and if the Cubs called us with that trade offer it should be DiPoto busting up laughing and then hanging up the phone. Bohm sucks so let's just toss him out entirely. Only for Chapman is this something that could work although I think that the Giants would have to add another good player or pitcher.
