In terms of pitching depth the Mariners have effectively swapped out one year of nine-year MLB veteran Marco Gonzales at $12.25 million for one year of nine-year MLB veteran Anthony DeSclafani at $12 million.
Say it slowly: A Quarter of a MILLION DOLLARS in Savings!
Anthony DeSclafani has posted 12.6 fWAR in 942.2 career innings covering 180 appearances, including 165 starts.

Marco Gonzales has posted 10.2 fWAR in 893 career innings covering 163 appearances, including 155 starts.

One difference is that Gonzales is the lefthander missing in the Mariners' seven-deep starting pitching chart.
Using your beloved Steamers:

MG 0.8 WAR in 139 IPs
ADS 0.6 WAR in 88 IPs

Projecting ADS for 139 IPs
0.9 WAR

Luke Arkins at Mariners Consigliere offers his take on Friday's acquisitions:

https://www.mariners-consigliere.com/p/ ... intriguing

Anthony DeSclafani's injuries are concerning and suggest why the one year, $12 million remaining on the righthander's contract might not be bargain compared to the two-year, $28 million contract landed by lefthander Sean Manaea,

In 2023 DeSclafani and Manaea were in the early San Francisco Giants starting rotation and ended the season with DeSclafani posting 1.0 fWAR in 99.2 innings and Manaea posting 1.1 fWAR in 117.2 innings. While DeSclafani started strong and faded, Manaea rebounded from a weak start to finish strong.

The Arkins piece compared the 2023 stats of Jarred Kelenic and Luke Raley. FanGraphs projects Kelenic with 2024 WAR and wRC+ of 1.2 and 101 in 123 games while projecting Raley with 2024 WAR and wRC+ of 1.2 and 104 in 102 games:

Raley is nearly five years older than Kelenic but each come with five years of team control (with Kelenic likely to enter arbitration a year earlier as a Super Two).

Will be fun to watch and compare those two in 2024 and beyond. I am confident in the outcome.

From MLBTR:

“While it’s unclear how much room the Mariners have remaining in their budget this winter, Dipoto’s comments certainly make it feasible that the club could look to shore up their infield depth before the offseason comes to a close. Gio Urshela, Whit Merrifield, and Amed Rosario are among the mid-level free agent infielders still available on the market.”

Exactly.

I am down with signing Snell. Our rotation would be ridiculous. We could still trade a Woo or a Miller for one more bat and our lineup would be solid. Not world beaters. But cheaper and in some ways better than last year.

But let’s start with Snell. Or possibly Shōta Imanaga if we have any more moves to make - replace RR with another TOR lefty and then trade from the abundance of pitching riches we’d have.

Its too bold and it makes to much sense so no chance it happens given the limp dicked betas we have making decisions.

imanaga has until Jan. 11 to reach an agreement.

Snell might sign after that.

My favorite thing about Jerry Dipoto supporters is that they defend him with their lives while he just continues to serve as Stanton's megaphone...

2 weeks ago they were all like, "OMG poor Jerry... :( :( :( Stanton won't let him do his job. He's probably so mad!!!"

Jerry after multiple =/= trades pulling the wool over their eyes in a Ryan Divish article: "Yeah, we're probably done and won't be spending more than $145 million this year. But what a complete team I've been able to build!"

Jerry supporters: "FUCKING STANTON!!!"

I am seeing fewer and fewer and fewer Jerry supporters. Almost like we were ahead of the trend.
