Both the Padres and White Sox rebuild finally paying off. Astros lost again last night and we're still two back.

I liked the move, and would have been all for signing Cole or Rendon last offseason (they weren't going to sign here though). You get good players when you can, and it wouldn't have cost a first round pick to sign a free agent.

I agree but why did Machado choose to sign for the Padres but the two you mentioned wouldn't have signed here?

I agree but why did Machado choose to sign for the Padres but the two you mentioned wouldn't have signed here?

For one, Padres outbid the other teams. Market was less than expected for Machado and Harper the big name teams were not offering the contracts they expected, so they went with Philly and SD. Cole and Rendon got bigger contracts from big market "contending" teams (Angels were expected to contend). Mariners wouldn't be able to compete with the big markets realistically.

I don't think Dipoto will sign big name FA's (30 million/yr types). I think he'll see what he has in the farm through 2021, and maybe trade for someone at the deadline or before 2022 season.
