Thats true. He might not have gotten the return that he wanted though. Teams tend to hold out for the best possible deal if there are multiple teams involved. And that goes both ways. Best to hear everybody's asking price before they pull the trigger on a deal.Sibelius Hindemith wrote: ↑Thu Jul 29, 2021 7:31 pmIf anything, Dipoto waited too long. He could have dealt Gravema, Haniger, Marco, Seager, etc a few weeks ago and the fans would have been much less upset.

Honestly, I love these trade deadlines. The M's have improved themselves long term by obtaining Toro. They have enough position players in the pipeline to field a competitive team for the next decade. Gilbert looks strong. I honestly think their future playoff success now solely depends on the development or acquisition of two legitimate Aces on the rotation: I could be Gilbert and Kirby, or another pairing but they have to be legitimate. For a mid-market team like Seattle, we need this... Detroit had McLain and Lolich, the Diamondbacks had Randy Johnson and Curt Shelling, the Mets had Seaver and Koosman, the Dodgers had Drysdale and Koufax, etc.
But this team is beginning to remind me of the development of the Blue Jays of Toronto who had winning seasons from 1983 to 1993 as they built a team of strong position players and then assembled pitching depth and added an ace with Jack Morris joining the likes of David Cone, David Wells, and a regular rotation of Jimmy Key, Juan Guzman, Todd Stottlemeyer, and Dave Stieb.
We have plenty of bodies developing, more than we can protect. We need two aces... they may be developing in our system right now... protect them. They may belong to other teams..... go get them. We need the highest level of quality right now in starting pitching... to identify, acquire, draft, or sign and develop two emerging aces.

Houston acquired Verlander in the last seconds of the deadline. Often the best deals come later rather than earlier....Sexymarinersfan wrote: ↑Thu Jul 29, 2021 7:34 pmThats true. After the dust settles and people recover from the pain of losing a player like Graveman who has become personally loved and popular... I believe that fans will come to realize that we came out ahead on that deal for Toro. I'm hoping the M's in this trading frenzy don't trade Marte, DeLoach, or Polcovich. I believe JRod is untouchable. And I hope Kirby, Hancock, and our top line pitchers are retained. Also, Shenton does have a chance to crack this MLB roster at 3B. We are getting better and the window is starting to open. Exciting stuff.
