So far he's generated $132 million in value and been paid $40+ in salary. The team has an escape clause in 2030 so it's not like Julio has nothing left to play for
That's great except for the fact that if they hadn't voluntarily gave him a new contract they would have only paid him about 5 Million so far and may have been able to use that money to go out get an actual middle of the order bat.
Agreed, this is a big part of the problem. It wouldn't be so bad if they didn't cap the budget at what they were paying 10 years ago. Makes no sense to just start paying your young players 20M to lock them up and then ignoring the current roster acting like you just improved your team.

Remember the BS they tried to convince the fans of??

They desperately wanted a player to market the team around. So that's what they paid for. There's also a scarcity mindset at work, trying to more or less trap the player here in South East Alaska in the worst park for hitters in the game.

If you have what looks like a premier player you really need to take the shot at signing him long term. Look at the teams, the nationals, Red Sox that wished they could have

Sure, so we are back to deciding if he sucks or not, looking at the production of his first 2000 PA he isn't so bad. He is known for getting off to poor starts and it does seem to be getting more difficult generally. The average OPS was .750 not too long ago wasn't it?
Julio may be Adam Jones with better defense when all is said and done.

It's not what we wanted or were promised... but it might be what it is. Which is very disappointing for a team that is missing its genuine superstar to turn from good to great.

He still has time to realize his potential. But right now he's not what this team needs him to be.

Evan White says hi, and thank you.

Ever wonder what the offer was to Kelenic?

I love team friendly deals.

But they're already paying Julio $20M. Hopefully he earns the rest of his contract too.

He had 3 good months when they signed him to the deal. Nobody does this type of thing except for Dipoto.

It's not so bad until you realize that by giving him that deal Julio is now earning ($20.185M) nearly 1/7th of the overall 2025 opening day payroll ($145.947M) budget.

Anthopoulos is pretty notorious for tying up his young, I don't know at what point he's offered contracts

Overall, I am disappointed in Julio. Seldom gets a big hit in a crucial spot. 2 on 2 out today and I had a feeling a K was coming and it did. I hope it is just another of his April slumps, but overall he needs to be better.

He gives away ABs, just gives them away.
