Of the 18 "draft busts" mentioned in the linked article, Evan White was the only one selected after Jerry Dipoto joined the Mariners in 2015.
Jack Z was awful.
I think Jack Z gets an unfair bad rap. They made him do a rebuild and decreased his payroll every year for his his first several years. Then they finally let him spend but got impatient and sent him packing before he had a chance to finish the rebuild. The team Jack Z assembled would have made the playoffs in 2016 if Dipoto hadn't traded off Trumbo and replaced him with Adam Lind.
Jack Z Drafted Kyle Seager(37 Career WAR) and brought in Nelson Cruz (17 War for M's in 4 years) and Robinson Cano (24 WAR for M's in 5 years). He also signed Ketel Marte (30 career WAR) and Edwin Diaz (3 time all star with 250 career saves) both of whom were traded off by Dipoto.
Off the top of my head, I was referring to his draft choices only.

Many of the washouts.

An article from 2015 trying to drum up something positive out of three home runs Ackley hit.
Perhaps the most intriguing thing has been the location of the pitches Ackley has hit out. Over the last four years, Ackley has developed a number of holes in his swing. He’s had trouble making solid contact over the outer half of the plate as well as up in the zone.

Danny Hultzen has to be the biggest bust, that was a real headscratcher even on draft day. The talent they passed on to take him, that he really never made the majors, and that his pitching form was questionable. The first thing they did was try to correct how he threw across his body
The talent was there, in 2013 he was really starting to come around and totally dominate at Tacoma https://www.baseball-reference.com/regi ... ltze001dan and then he got hurt again. Overall, in 192 minor league innings he only gave up SIX home runs. Plus in college he was insanely good. I think he would have had a very good career in the majors.

I can't really fault a guy for getting hurt.

Jeff Clement and Phillipe Aumont on the other hand...

And Ryan Anderson as well. The guy was a Randy Johnson clone, from ages 18 -20 he had strikeout rates in the minors that very few other guys had. He had control issues and walked a lot of guys but like with Johnson that could have been fixed and he probably would have had a good career too if his shoulder didn't give out.

Ackley their biggest bust? I don't buy that, look around the league, its not that uncommon for a highly selected player to have a middling career. He put up 8 war, what did Chambers put up?
I agree, he should be at the bottom of that list.
Al "Choo Choo" Chambers was the #1 pick in the 1979 draft. Even back then, the M's ownership was cheap. He got a $60k signing bonus. The 2nd pick by the Mets, was Tim Leary, an ok pitcher, got $100k. The 3rd pick was Jay Schroder(yes the NFL QB) by the Blue Jays who got $135k. The M's could have had better player in either #6 Andy van Slyke or #10 Tim Wallach, the 2 darlings of WAR for their careers. AVS (41.7 WAR) had a $42.500 and Wallach(38.5 WAR) for $77,500. Chambers got -.5 WAR for his career....just another stellar draft by the M's
