Managers aren't particularly important.
You're still dodging the actual argument.

I mentioned his mediocre playing career as ONE part of an exceptionally thin résumé. You isolated that single point, rattled off a list of legendary managers, and declared it meaningless. Fine. Throw his playing career out entirely. What's left? A guy who's never managed a single game at any level. How does that strengthen the case for hiring him?

And saying "managers aren't particularly important" doesn't make it true. Managers make decisions about bullpen usage, substitutions, lineups, player accountability, and clubhouse leadership that directly affect wins and losses. If those decisions barely mattered, teams could save millions by letting the front office manage games remotely.

More importantly, if managers don't matter, why defend this particular hire at all? Why not hire someone with actual experience and reduce the uncertainty?

My argument is about risk, qualifications, and a front office with a questionable track record. Yours is that some great managers were mediocre players and managers don't matter anyway.

FWIW, I agree that roster talent and front-office decisions are important drivers of success. But you're taking that reasonable observation and stretching it into the absurd conclusion that managers barely matter. Research actually shows that MLB managers have measurable effects on winning and run prevention. Studies have also found a positive, albeit limited, relationship between managerial experience and performance, particularly in complex decision-making situations.

So no, experience doesn't guarantee success. But neither does inexperience make someone an exciting hire.

And that's my entire point about Kanzler. We're talking about an underperforming team that needs to win NOW, and the front office chose someone who has never managed a single game at any level over a candidate with demonstrated MLB managerial success.

Maybe Kanzler turns out to be brilliant. But what evidence suggests he's the better choice? You've spent two responses explaining why my concerns supposedly don't matter without offering a single reason Kanzler is actually qualified for the job. That's not a rebuttal. That's avoiding the question.

Hooray Kanzler will be the new manager of the Mariners? Who the fuck is Jason Kanzler?
He had the two qualities othe Mariners are really looking for in a manager. He is cheap and he is a yes man those are John Stanton‘s two biggest priorities.. So what they’re saying is nobody else wanted the job. It’s pretty pathetic. Think about it.. this is an unserious organization.

This is just killing any argument that the Mariners aren’t looking for a Yes man with analytics as the gospel.

Yes man period.

I'm not dodging anything. You commented on his playing career, which I thought was irrelevant. That's my "actual argument".

And I mentioned that "ONE part" is irrelevant. I didn't actually do scientific research. I just pointed out some great managers that sucked as players. I think it's pretty obvious you can lead a team to victory without ever having great success as a player. It also kind of seems like legendary superstars generally don't become managers. They either ride into the sunset or some become television analysts like Ortiz, Rodriguez, or John Smoltz. (all would be exciting managerial hires, but they probably make a lot more money on TV)

I'm not defending the hire. I'm just saying you're making a lot of assumptions. I mentioned that they might all be correct. You're not alone. The internet is full of disgruntled fans complaining about Jerry's "puppet" hire.

But, the same reason I'm not defending the hire is the same reason I'm not assuming it was a terrible decision. I don't have any real info, and neither do you. Rookie managers have won the WS, and veteran managers have lost 100 games.

I still think there is only so much positive or negative that a manger can do to impact wins and losses. Put the steal sign on. Put in a reliver. Put in a pinch hitter. I just don't see it as that complicated or impactful.

What would allow the Ms to win more games? a) going with Espada or b) sticking with Dan Wilson and adding Aaron Judge?

Every MLB team runs these same promotions regardless of payroll or winning %.

I just don't get why people would make a big deal about this. Baseball managers aren't like football or basketball coaches. They don't install innovative offenses or defenses. They don't give rah-rah speeches that make the team go out and steamroll the other team. All they really have to do is have a good relationship with the players, not screw up the lineup and not screw up pitching changes. Really, the best manager in baseball would have made the Mariners what, 3-5 games better in 2026?

I'm neither thrilled nor bummed about Kanzler, although if he doesn't do the dumb things Dan Wilson did we'll all be happy with that. But we need players, this is a distraction from that more than anything.

Seems like the concept of not wanting to work for Jerry as been neatly swept under the table

Whoever took the job had to know they're only lasting until Dipoto and Hollander get fired for being a terrible team President/GM. No way anyone with experience puts themselves at the mercy of Jerry Dipoto's player personnel choices.
