Who was your first baseball hero.. and why
Re: Who was your first baseball hero.. and why
I remember him with the Angels in the mid/late 60s. He was highly touted.

It's 1965 and I'm 10, just "getting into" MLB and Willie Mays was in his 14th year already. Even though he made his share of errors in CF..he never seemed to make ANY. As a baserunner he never seemed to make any errors either, but he created lots of panic for the other team with his speed. He was a good sport win or lose and always hustled. Even though the Giants only went to the post season a couple times during his career, Willie was a big reason why SFG was one of the winningest teams in MLB during the 1960s.
The NL also enjoyed an incredible win streak versus the AL during May's career.

Ah, the Say Hey Kid. If I had to pick a MLB player as my first hero, it would have been Willie. But I went local instead. I was 10 in 1962, 12 in 1964. Basically the era of a bunch of really good CF's.
