In MLB Trade Rumors' annual ranking of free agents, a single columnist picked the Mariners as a landing spot for each of these free agents:

14. OF Lourdes Gurriel Jr., four years, $54 million
20. DH J.D. Martinez, two years, $40 million
50. SS Tim Anderson, one year, $12 million

With three columnists making predictions for 50 free agents, the average team would be named for five free agents. However, the Mariners have the reputation for eschewing free agency in favor of trades.

Because of ballpark factors, a free agent pitcher is probably more likely to sign with Seattle than a free agent hitter.

Perhaps Teo’s agent bluffed that Hernandez would accept a qualifying offer. The Mariners could have called the bluff in hopes of getting a compensatory draft pick.

Was Hernandez likely to choose to return to Seattle?

They and literally EVERYONE say it is hard to get FA hitters to come to Seattle but Teo is going to come back to a team that didn't even try to make the playoffs and to a park where he hit .217 with a .643 OPS for a 1 year deal???? Yeah right.

Yep. I called it a few months ago on some thread back in June or July. I knew they wouldn't extend Teo the qualifying offer. Should they? Yes, absolutely. But it was obvious they wouldn't, that they would look at him accepting as a financial disaster.

$6m more than he made in 2023 and $3m more than he would have made if he won his arb hearing. lol

Thinking about the famous minor league catcher swap of 2023. Why would the Rays do it? Same age, same stats, one guy in A ball and one in AAA.

I would assume that the there was no room for the Tampa guy and they were running out of options and either needed to bring him to the bigs trade him or lose him. That's just a guess though.
