The frustrating thing about not being aggressive at the deadline is that it basically says that the M's are OK punting another year of Kirby/Gilbert/Castillo control down the road... the pitching is here and ready to win now... so why would you not do everything in your power to build as good of an offense as you can?

That was always the truly maddening thing about this M's off season.

Turns out I was already bitching about it on Feb. 5th...

We've been complaining about it here since before 2021 when they should have started pushing for the playoffs, but instead Dipoto tried playing (losing) for a better draft pick until after the trade deadline, only for the players to turn things around once they cut the dead weight and missed the playoffs by one game.

Three years in a row they had opportunity to fix this offense, and we're still just an average team because they kept kicking the can down the road hoping their average players would turn into impact players just because they get older, and now there aren't any good, viable options that will be on the market to add to the team.

Only people happy with the off season were the Jerry groupies on twitter and now they all look like the teeny bobber dopes that they are.

MLB writers know Jerry too well. Here are who they have for our targets.

Tony Kemp, 2B/LF, Athletics
Kemp's offensive numbers this season are underwhelming (.595 OPS), but he's been productive since the All-Star break (.796 OPS) and offers defensive versatility in the infield and outfield. The 31-year-old will be a free agent at the end of the season and is owed just $1.25 million in 2023, so he could be a helpful bench piece for a contender.
Potential fits: Giants, Mariners, Red Sox

Carlos Santana, 1B, Pirates
The 37-year-old veteran has had his ups and downs at the plate this season, but he remains a disciplined hitter with a high walk percentage and low strikeout rate. Since June 14, Santana -- an impending free agent due roughly $2.25 million this season -- has a .753 OPS and remains a solid glove at first base.
Potential fits: Mariners, Marlins, Phillies

I just read this over lunch and almost laughed out loud thinking of what Seattle or Bust's reaction would be to adding this guy. sodomojo reads like a Jr. High Class project sometimes.

So because the M's have idiotically focused on Versatility resulting in a dogshit offense they should double down and somehow it would REALLY help this time. Can't f-ing make it up. Are these kids not taught any critical thinking in school these days or what???
What if the Mariners looked for a lower key add at second base? This isn't a gamechanger in the same mold, but it would be a big help to the team I think because of the versatility aspect that the Mariners have mentioned so often. Sure, he isn't the greatest hitter, but his glove is amazing and he is incredible at stealing bases. Starting a few games each week and pinch-running late, all the while splitting time with Cabby or giving JP a rest day if needed?

That's exactly what the Mariners could get if they called up the Baltimore Orioles and asked about Jorge Mateo.
Mateo isn't going to excite you at the plate. He's hitting .214/.264/.349 this season,

the pitching is NOT ready to win now! Kirby and Woo blow up every other time out! the bullpen is completely shot! This is a preparation year for 24 and 25. The kids are taking their lumps and building up their arms for going deeper in 24 and 25

The M’s are no. 1 in total ERA in July. They led baseball in pitched WAR for like a month and a half. They have a top-3 staff in baseball. Not sure how much more ready you can be.

Man I don’t want to say mean things… but your assessments of the M’s and strengths/weaknesses is something.

Maybe trade for Cody Bellinger. He has a $25M mutual option with a $5M buyout. If he does well, try to give him a new contract for 2 more years, 2yrs/$40M, plus a $5M signing bonus.

Trade for Bednar, or maybe in the Bellinger trade get Alzolay too. Trade Teo.

Angels literally just fucked the market.

They traded no. 2 and 3 prospects in their org for 2x pitchers with 2 months of remaining control.

Now everyone is going to want top prospects for rentals.
