"Look, the Giants signaled they have money," Heyman said. "I'm gonna say the Giants -- I've heard that whispered for the Giants with Bauer, we shall see. He's got personality quirks and that may hold him back.

"He's a fantastic pitcher -- incredible, great pitcher. I'm gonna say he gets five for 150."

That's a five-year, $150 million contract from the Giants for Bauer, who turns 30 years old in January.
Bauer will get a sizable contract. I like the idea of going after Musgrove especially since the Pirates keep trading away good players the past few years (Cole, Glasnow, Meadows, Marte).
My first offer for Bauer would be 2/75

The max I think he's worth would be 2/80 which really pushes the per year envelope, which is what I think Bauer wanted to experiment with given his desire to go year by year, but limits the overall risk and negatives that come with a long contract.

It's crazy money for two years, but the benefit to the team is paying more now to not have the 4th and 5th years of the contract/dollars weighing on your roster.

I think paying up is the only way to get him to forego the long contract, but its probably worth it if they make the other one or two moves it would take to field a winner.

yeah, forty mil seems to be the number for a single year. Get him to forgo?...I understood he doesn't want a multi year contract. Personally. I am in the Charley's Findley school of ML contracts, they all should be one year. But there would need to be some adjustments to the system i guess to make that really feasible

A 1 or 2 year contract will be risky for Bauer. The guy had a 4.48 ERA and 4.34 FIP in 2019, the last "real" full MLB season. His track record before that does not constitute him as a TOR SP either. Dude will be really betting on himself if he only signs for 1-2 years.

its what he has said, who knows what the reality is now that he is a FA. The deal is, if he goes the single year route, they are not going to be $20-$30 mil contracts, that is, longer versions divided by the years they run. They are going to reflect the actual value of a single year in terms of WAR, so $40 mil would reflect a five WAR season from Bauer, which is about where he was last season extrapolated over a full season
“I’ll go year-to-year my entire career," said Bauer, who is scheduled to become a free agent after the 2020 season. “Why would you lock yourself in a situation that may not make you happy? I think that’s highly inefficient. Everybody is afraid of risk. Everyone is scared.

“It’s still unproven how clubs feel about it, but looking at the market, and studying it, I identified for myself personally that it’s the best route to go forward."

What I mean is if he has 5/150 on the table, its going to take significantly more per year over 1 or 2 years to still give him the chance to earn more over the course of his final seasons than he would have at 5/150.

He has to think that after two years he could do better than the remaining 3/70M he would have gotten from the Giants or whoever.

The reason he wanted to go yearly is to maximize his yearly earnings. There has to be an obvious benefit to him over the 5/150. 2/80 might not even be enough incentive given his age. Maybe it will really be about "situation," but dudes on the tail end of his career now, we'll see where he ends up, I think he'll take the 5 years somewhere.

He could easily become one of these $11M per year guys by then. How much will he bet on himself..

That isn't what he says...
Why would you lock yourself in a situation that may not make you happy?
Thought his motivation was putting himself in a position to win season to season

that...his reason he claims to want to go one year contracts
“I want to be on a contender every year because I love competing at the highest level and the highest level is the World Series,” he said. “So I want to have a chance to go to the World Series every single year.

Every professional athlete says this.
