Looks like Evans' "pitch to contact" approach didn't work out. Sounds like something pitchers with weak stuff do in lieu of fooling batters with movement and location. I wouldn't say it went as badly as i expected, but it still felt like the Mariners were out of it all game long.

You still need to have good stuff to pitch to contact, particularly like a sinker. Pitching to contact means a willingness to put the ball in the strike zone, let the batter try to hit it, but not well, induce ground balls to the infield. You want to throw strikes, be ahead in the count, it can keep the pitch count down if effective

If it's just a matter of willingness to challenge batters by putting it in the zone more often then i think it was a mistake not changing that approach for this opponent and location. Not in that bandbox.
