Here is a Seager trade with us paying 50% of his salary

Trade
2019 $5MM
2020 $9.75MM
2021 $9.25MM
2022 $7.5MM
Total $31.5

Trade partner also pays $31.5 and hopes for 5-6 WAR or ~$40MM+ in value

Keep
2019 $10MM
2020 $19.5MM
2021 $18.5MM
2022 $3MM
Total $51MM

Yep he is tradeable even with the poison pill
Hope for 5-6 WAR from a 3B that has gotten worse every year and is on the wrong side of 30? I don't see a team paying 10 million a year for Seager right now, and I don't see Mariners trading him by the trade deadline.

Also, I see 19.0 and 18.0 on his contract, where do you see the 3 million dollar buyout?

Say they trade him in the offseason. Mariners owe 37 million with no trade. With a trade it's 52 million. Mariners pay 32, the other team pays 20. Are they going to give up much for a 32 year old 3B that hits .220 with 20 HR and plays pretty good defense that will probably just deteriorate with age? I guess they save 5 million dollars, but to what end? They don't have anyone else to play 3B.

I have faith that JD will find a way. He got rid of Cano in just four easy trades. He can get rid of Seager who is owed far less.

btw I just listened to JD on his weekly radio show. At the end I was sure we will win the WS in 2021. Dude could sell Joey Chestnut a hotdog at 12:15pm on the 4th of July.

Crap, he beat me by more than 7 hours. I agree with whoever said the OF alignment was weird with Haniger in center with Fraley and Kelenic flanking.
The paying to rid yourself of Seager to turn around and commit to a then 32 year old is odd.
I stated my concerns about penciling in Marco G. with his diminished velocity.
I believe I had Marte and JP up the middle but SHed would be a shot at supersub~Marwin G, Mark McKlemore, Zobrist type.

Seager might be another Segura type where he is a good player but there might not be a market for that position.

....just think about Cano being here for 5 more years. We would be having wheelchair races instead of the hydros.

The rebuild is going great...unload Corey’s brother and that anarexic 2nd baseman and call it a season

Divish takes a crack at it.............
It’s a very interesting question. I will stay in the organization. Looking at the free-agent markets after the 2020 and 2021 season, it’s not exactly inspiring for a team that will have a lot of money. You have to imagine the Red Sox will try to lock up Mookie Betts and the Indians will do the same with Francisco Lindor. Would they commit huge dollars to J.T. Realmuto at age 30? Would anyone want to sign here unless the Mariners offer 15 percent higher than the market value? I do think they’ll make a run at Trevor Bauer at some point. Hell, it might not even be the same front office by 2021.

Here’s an internal starting lineup:

Mallex Smith, LF
J.P. Crawford, SS
Mitch Haniger, RF
Daniel Vogelbach, DH
Kyle Seager, 3B
Evan White, 1B
Omar Narvaez, C
Jake Fraley, CF
Shed Long, 2B
I actually think that some trio of Vogelbach, White and Domingo Santana will be used. With a poison pill clause in his contract that turns a club option into a player option of $15 million or more, I just don’t see how Kyle Seager can be traded.

The hope would be that top prospect Jarred Kelenic is ready to go by then. But that’s a pretty big leap given his experience. If he continues his current trajectory, it would seem more likely by midseason.

Smith is starting to play more like the player they expected when they acquired him, but he’s probably not the best option in center field.

I’d expect the Mariners to continue with the catching tandem of Narvaez and Tom Murphy moving forward. They don’t have much in the way of depth to challenge those spots. Neither is outstanding defensively, but their combined offensive output helps offset those limitations.

Interesting, Mallex but not Domingo.

If Mallex Smith isn't the best option in center field he's sure as eff not our best option in a corner position. What a dunce.

Theres no galaxy where Mallex in LF will be better than Santana in RF.

Yeah. It would be Santana RF, Haniger CF, Fraley LF with Smith or Bishop as 4th OF. Smith might get more in a trade at this point, ship him if he keeps up his hot hitting this year for some pitching. Maybe Santana DH against LHP with Bishop in CF, pushing Haniger back to RF.
