If they have a 2-1 lead, then go with Ray against Verlander and try to sneak in a win, then you have Gilbert for game 5. That's how I'd do it if you want to try to avoid short rest. If down 2-1, you have to move Gilbert up though.

There's no need to put that much pressure on Gilbert. Plus, I'm not sure what message that sends to potential FA pitchers like Ray to sign with the M's.
