I would liken it to going for an interception of a long bomb on 4th down. You have to know the situation and unless you KNOW you can catch it, you have to make sure you don't give up the lead.Michael K. wrote: ↑Mon Oct 10, 2022 9:06 pmSlowing it down, frame by frame? Sure, it looks as if the CF has no chance. But this comes down more to communication than anything else. If Springer is calling it, then Bichette is in the wrong. If Springer called it, he was wrong, because you don't call it if you can't catch it, but it is more about communication than being smart with effort. Not often people are going to criticize that type of effort.

Not if Springer called it. In that case the IFer is supposed to get out of his way...which, if he had, he would have been there to grab the ball instead of diving into Springer. The OFer is coming in, it's their ball if they call it. If he didn't call it then he fucked up, if he did then Bichette fucked up. This is not even close to batting away a ball on fourth down. If he catches it they win, right? Zero comparison. How do you know he didn't call it, then held up due to the fact that the SS was running straight at him? Not sure how not wanting to dive head first into another human makes him a pussy either.D-train wrote: ↑Mon Oct 10, 2022 9:17 pmI would liken it to going for an interception of a long bomb on 4th down. Averaging 96 games per season the last 4, although did make it to 133 this season.
Had a big booboo when he got beaned. Dives into a guys arm and about dies.
Pfft.
Re: Game Thread: Wild Card Game 2
If he called and would have caught if Bichette would have peeled off early then you are correct but I don't think would have caught if Bichette never left the infield given he didn't look like he slowed down at all and still wasn't close.Michael K. wrote: ↑Mon Oct 10, 2022 9:20 pmNot if Springer called it. Now I am really confused, he never slowed down, dove head first, but is a pussy? You guys have me a bit perplexed. Again, not sure what you are arguing. If he didn't call it, then he fucked up. At no point did I say that wasn't true. But, if he is running in full speed, and the SS calls him off, do you think he is going to slam on the breaks and spring backwards to be in position to catch the bounce, or is he going to peel off? They are taught to peel off, which is still not going to put him in position to catch the ball after it bounces either. He would have had to make that call immediately, and then stood there and watched as Bichette fail to get there....which would have opened him up to criticism about not selling out. Unless the IF is standing under it, or has called it immediately, the OFer is going to charge in. That ball ended up in no mans land.
Re: Game Thread: Wild Card Game 2
It's not the shortstops job to call him off. It's his job.
I was speaking of his inability to stay healthy and getting hurt every year, probably by doing stupid things like not communicating with his infielders.
He got hit by a guy's arm, was one of the weakest collisions in baseball history and they practically had to bring out the stretcher for him.
Averaging 96 games per year the last 4 seasons. Wuss.

Yeah, that's what I was getting at. If he called the ball, then that mishap is on Bichette, if he didn't call him off, then he has to get out of the way. Either way, I am not sure that he is in position to catch it off the bounce unless he immediately backed off and watched Bichette go after it.

That I get. He acted like he had been shot in the hand after getting hit in game one too!

Rizz's call at the end of the game. Note that he jots down the final out on his scoresheet.
I'm glad he got to call it after such a long time.

Goldsmith in that video is the best... He's visibly stressed out when it starts and I think holding back tears by the end
