I'm a bit surprised that Macko was the prospect in this trade just because it seems like Toronto would have wanted someone like Taylor Dollard or Bryce Miller. I wonder if those were the guys they wanted and Seattle simply said no, or if Macko was their guy all along. I'm not down on Macko exactly, but he's been injured a lot and it's hard to develop when you can't stay on the field. I'm also a bit surprised they didn't pry an additional mid-level prospect out of the M's, someone like Spencer Packard, Kaden Polcovich, Zach Deloach, or a pitcher from the arm pile.
The system is really getting depleted though, so that's something to watch. Most of the players that are left, especially at the top tier, are guys the Mariners should want to keep, several of which could take major leaps next season, which is pretty exciting.
I like the trade. Teoscar will be another feared slugger in the middle of the line-up. Don't want to see Suarez and him back to back in the order as both are righties and both excel in lots of K's. I read that Hernandez changed his swing from the massive uppercut flyball loft philosophy to more of a line drive swing and that helped his contact rate, so good there.
Take a chance on Lowe for 2nd base. What do opposing managers and pitchers do with another slugging mistake crusher as opposed to Frazier's weak-ass Ichiro imitation minus the speed?
Go after the pitcher and OFer from Japan. It's only money and no player capital depletion if going for trades instead.
Macko is the wildcard that I disagree with, even with his walk rate and injury propensity. Dipoto (Hollander, I don't know enuf about) has always traded away left-handers and the M's are absolutely bereft of them now. Plenty of time to change with possible trades and FA signings but FanGraph's RR projects 2023 M's bullpen as thus:

What dregs are in AAA & AA? Sheffield could be converted to relief but I don't believe he'll ever be anybody to be counted on.

The 4 lefties in AAA? 28 y.o. Speier was waived by KC. He actually was pretty good in limited action with the Royals in '22 but sucked for them in AAA. 31 y.o. Bernardino, has exactly 2 MLB appearances in his career. Margevicius??? Yah, we all love him, don't we? Gag!!! 26 y.o. Ben Onyshko is an unknown. Certainly hasn't excelled, but he's Canadian, just like Paxton, eh? Drafted in the 24th round of the 2018 MLB draft out of Stetson U. in Florida. He wasn't a world beater at Stetson and was "adequate" in Arkansas in'22.
There's only 3 LH RP's in AA and they're unknowns, but perhaps Jorge Benitez shows promise. Down in A+ there might be three future players in Brayan Perez, Blake Townsend and Raúl Alcantara but they are young.
That's the part of the Adam Macko trade that bothers me. Swanson was a give to get. Gotta count on the M's brass to find that next bullpen lefty stud but the cupboard is bare right now, imho.
