My bad, I keep saying they are 9th in the AL. They are 9th in the Wildcard. They are 12th in a 15 team league, that SUCKS! WE are going to hang a banner this year that says we are better than KC, Anaheim and the A's! And what's worse? Fans would pay and show up!
Nothing to see here, just a successful franchise failing to make the playoffs yet again. But? It's certainly not a problem, the organization has no issues, every move they made just fell flat this year. That's baseball. No one could have seen this coming....except just about everyone in this fucking forum.

I actually do think Dipoto will get fired if they finish much below .500.Michael K. wrote: ↑Thu Aug 20, 2026 9:15 pmI've been saying that for a few weeks now. Best to just lose. I doubt anything will happen, but at least then maybe they'll have to answer to some criticism.
But be careful. Vogelbomb is going to have to break out his vast baseball knowledge to let you know how little you understand about why this team is actually successful and you just don't fully understand.
This is supposed to be the window. The crest. The young players were merging with the veterans in 2026, how could we ever afford to add high prices free agents?!
I don't really get the sense his time here is a guarantee if the team doesn't perform at this point. I think they'd have made it public if he got much of an extension.
They've made the playoffs a couple times, but the team has still been more of a disappointment than a success story. Dipoto wasted a couple years of our window by not realizing the team was ready to win if they'd just add the right piece or two.
Something he's now proven incapable of anyways.

They didn't just reach the post season, they won a divisional series in 2022 and then lost to the eventual champion Houston Astros blowing game 1 on the Robbie Ray special. They won a divisional series in 2025 and came very close to winning the ALCS.Michael K. wrote: ↑Thu Aug 20, 2026 7:08 pmFor the last time, for those in the back not listening. The Farm System is to help win at the Major League level. Two playoff appearances since 2001 or since Jerry got here is not winning at the Major League level. It's not a strawman you dope, it's a fact.
The Farm system DOES help win at the Major League level. Are you trying to deny that?
Is this not WINNING? I'm even including THIS season. And the best part is the farm is still well stocked. Mariners have the #1 pitching prospect in all of baseball. Rodden is hitting. Emerson still has potential, and there's more bats on the farm. Plus Castillo was the highest paid player and that money is coming off the books. That's money they can use to bolster the offense via free agency this upcoming offseason.

It's possible but I get the sense that Stanton trusts DiPoto implicitly and is more hands off. Obviously, I could be mistaken about that, or there could be a push from some of the non-public members of the ownership group to make a change.bpj wrote: ↑Thu Aug 20, 2026 10:47 pmI actually do think Dipoto will get fired if they finish much below .500.Michael K. wrote: ↑Thu Aug 20, 2026 9:15 pmI've been saying that for a few weeks now. Yep, could be either way, I definitely don't know. My feeling was if they were content with how things have gone the last few years, we'd probably have heard of an extension. But it's not like every business move gets publicized so I'm just hoping at this point.GL_Storm wrote: ↑Thu Aug 20, 2026 10:55 pmIt's possible but I get the sense that Stanton trusts DiPoto implicitly and is more hands off. Re: GT 8.19.26 M's #1 Prospect Suddenly Retires; can't show his face as Mariner
Sometimes patience is good.
The problem with veteran free agents is they're not gonna sign a one year deal. So, if you make a move, then you're stuck with that player and hands are tied for the next offseason. Maybe (hopefully) they've got their eyes set on someone this offseason. I took a peek. Joc Pederson will be available. Bo Bichette also.
Castillo is coming off the books. Plus they could increase payroll.
It seems like they're gonna let Arozarena walk, though. Or maybe they can resign him... maybe he is just unwilling to sign and wants to test FA. We'll see.
I could be wrong, but I think it will be DiPoto manning the phones this winter. I personally don't care one way or the other. But, in my view he's got the team in a "win now" position. The alternative is blow the whole team up and start over. Trade all the good players for draft picks... Lose 100 games for a couple seasons... to me that would be ridiculous. Too much talent on the team.
Elephant in the room is Cal Raleigh is basically single-handedly gonna cost the team a trip to the post season. He didn't have to hit 60 homers again. All the Mariners needed out of him was average level production. He became a black hole in the lineup.
Colt Emerson was a disappointment also, but he hit some long balls, so there's still a lot of potential there. Brock looks pretty good. They got more hitting prospects on the farm too like Montes, Arroyo, Celesten, Farmelo, and Reese.
Kade Anderson now the #1 pitching prospect in all of baseball.
This doesn't seem like "our GM is a complete idiot" situation to me at all. Furthermore, it's not like any GM on any team is really an idiot. Nobody is gonna trade you Boardwalk for Baltic Avenue. It's all about the prospects and hopefully they pan out.
Cal Raleigh was panning out beautifully and then he went down the drain. I find it a lot easier to say Cal Raleigh sucks than to say Jerry Dipoto sucks. I am really unclear what moves Jerry has made that have been so disastrous or idiotic and not just standard moves that any GM would make. Where is the long list of stupid trades, albatross contracts, failing to win post season series, mortgaging the farm t results to show for it? All the GMS are using the same analytics. At this point they could use AI. At one point Billy Beane was the man, but in today's day and age I really don't think you should expect much difference from the new GM. I think pretty much every GM is just making educated guesses and rolling dice.

There's zero reason they would have to blow it up if they fire Dipoto.
Just like when Dipoto took over for Z, the next GM would just have to add his guys to the mix.
That's Dipoto's problem- spending the money. He has no idea how to add the final pieces. We've needed one or two more pieces since his first year when he added Nori Aoki and Wade Miley as the missing pieces to add to Nelson Cruz, Cano, and Seager to make the push for the playoffs.
WEEEAAAAAAAK.
He has no idea how to put a winning team together, amd it obviously shows. Only 3 teams have had fewer playoff appearances in the last ten years. Hard to be a Dipoto supporter at this point.
We're an average team, at best, 11 years after he got here. Time to move on from that bum.

90 wins in 2021, 2022, and 2025. ALCS Game 7 in 2025.
You know damn well that if Diopoto (or you or me) was tasked to being the GM of the Dodgers we would be in the post season every year.
Dipoto is not the GM for the Dodgers or the Yankees. He's the GM of a mid market team.
The Cubs went 108 years without reaching the World Series. It's not like there's some super easy method to win a bunch of games as a mid market team. I am failing to see how hiring some new GM would make any sort of monumental difference one way or another. I think it's fairly easy to make an argument that Jerry has put the organization in a good spot based on the resources he's been given.
