The problem with that is Ford doesn't want to play first base, and his value is only diminished if you have him do it. And you don't want to bring him up if the plan is to trade him, that could have been the reason Locklear wasn't called up. So maybe they are taking a shot at Naylor. I would think they would have to, part of the reason for trading for him.

Jerry hates the actual deadline day and only having 4-6 hours to make a trade. He said something to that affect last year when he again, did nothing on the actual day.
2 Things we know to be true for Jerry: He values prospects #1 - they are above winning the WS, proven all-stars, etc. and second - Bullpen is the least valued part of the team to him - his ideology is you can just throw anybody in the pen and they will do fine.
Irritating...
Good move getting Naylor and Geno but we had other holes to fill and the moves Hou/Tex did today easily countered those. We will score more runs but our playoff hopes hang completely on our starting pitchers returning to form.

Here was the deal for Willie Castro:
"Cubs sending Double-A pitchers Ryan Gallagher and Sam Armstrong back to Minnesota in the deal for Castro"

There might be lots but the quality falls off quite a bit after you get past Alonzo, and Pete's not leaving NY. Need to look at it in terms of what teams are going to be in the market for a first baseman. With any sort of competition Naylor's price could be increased. Complain about Dipoto but he's managed to get some pretty team friendly contracts signed, we shall seeBig_Maple wrote: ↑Thu Jul 31, 2025 9:38 pmThere's lots of good 1B options in the FA class next year depending on how spendy the FO wants to get.
Personally, I am happy with Naylor, and would love to see a way that we could bring him back.
1B Free Agents: Pete Alonso (opt-out), Josh Naylor, Paul Goldschmidt, Rhys Hoskins (mutual option), Carlos Santana, Justin Turner, Josh Bell, LaMonte Wade Jr., Wilmer Flores, Donovan Solano, Ty France, Connor Joe

Twins trade Griffin Jax to Rays for Taj Bradley in deadline buzzer-beater.
The kid was 6-6 with a 4.61 ERA.
We couldn't give them one of our many young arms?

Anybody know when Santos is coming back.
Re: It is official: Naylor is the biggest deadline move
As of 7/1 he had began throwing light BP sessions on 6/24. The return date was expected to be late July. But I had not heard any ramp up news so there might have been a delay.

Hopefully he gets back sometime next month.
Re: It is official: Naylor is the biggest deadline move
To sum it up:
July 24
• Seattle Mariners get: 1B Josh Naylor 121 OPS+
• Arizona Diamondbacks get: LHP Brandyn Garcia #17 and RHP Ashton Izzi #12 in AZ system.
July 30
• Seattle Mariners get: LHP Caleb Ferguson 115 ERA+
• Pittsburgh Pirates get: RHP Jeter Martinez #23 in Pit system, the trades give an instant re-ranking
July 31
• Seattle Mariners get: 3B Eugenio Suárez 143 OPS+
• Arizona Diamondbacks get: 1B Tyler Locklear #6, RHP Hunter Cranton #20, RHP Juan Burgos #17
You know our 2 most MLB ready BP parts got shipped out and we only brought in a 115 ERA (113 ERA+ career) guy. 6 out of the top 25 prospects are gone but only 1 was in the top 10 (Top 100 style prospect in T-Lock). A number of AL teams really improved dramatically in Houston, Rangers, NYY, and Seattle needed to outshine them all. They improved dramatically but they did not do everything at their disposal. They needed another leverage arm, every other GM understood this and yet Seattle did not even try to get any of the really good BP arms dealt:
Bednar, Duran, Jax, Shelby Miller, Doval, Maton, Varland, Mason Miller, Helsey. 9 BP studs and were dealt and we didn't get one?
Padres Mason Miller for 4.5 years and a 145 OPS+ OF, ad a 135 OPS+ 1B/DH. In Ohearn, and Laureano and a decent #5 starter in JP Sears.
