Final Trade Deadline Plan

Post by Seattle or Bust » Sat Jul 19, 2025 8:14 pm

Mariners trade OF Jared Sunderstrom, 3B Luis Suisbel, Util Dylan Moore to the White Sox for OF Luis Robert Jr. and RHP Steven Wilson

M's Rationale: The M's trade for Robert Jr. as a pure rental to platoon in right field with Canzone and come in as a pinch hitter against lefty relievers/base runnner/defensive specialist if he's not starting vs righties. I've looked up and down the league for players who mash lefties and Robert is the only pure rental who might be available. You might laugh at acquiring him, but the guy has a 163 wRC+ against left handed pitching this year. Aside from mashing lefties, Robert is a stud base runner, fielder, and already has 23 stolen bags on the year. Getting Robert in house can also help them evaluate if they would like to offer a deal to have him back. Steven Wilson is having a career year... pitching to a 2.15 ERA over 29 innings and is controlled for the next 2 seasons. He throws from a very similar arm angle to Paul Sewald and has a very similar pitch mix. The M's add him to shore up some of their middle relief.

White Sox Rationale: It's not what the Sox wanted to do with Robert heading into the year, but they have no choice. They are not picking up his $20M club options the next 2 seasons and need to move him to recoup any value at all. In acquiring Sunderstrom and Suisbel, they add players who will slot 10-20 in their system to a farm that is sorely lacking in position players. Dylan Moore gives them an outfielder to replace Robert for the remainder of the year as his contract expires.

Mariners trade 1B Tyler Locklear, SS/OF Tai Peete, RHP Emerson Hancock to the Diamondbacks for 3B Eugenio Suarez

M's Rationale: Simple. The M's reunion with Suarez is tailor made. The M's need an offensive upgrade at 3B and Saurez does that in a big way. The move allows the M's to move Williamson back down to the minors where he can further develop some pop and see if he's ready to start for them in '26. He is the monster bat they need to push this offense forward.

Diamondbacks Rationale: The Dbacks are sure to move on from Naylor, so Locklear slots right in as the future at 1B for them. A fringe top-100 prospect, Locklear has tapped into more power of late and is again putting up very respectable numbers in the minors. Moving Geno also allows them to call up top prospect Jordan Lawler and slot him in at 3rd, giving them a young, controlled infield. The Dbacks need to improve the back end of their rotation and Hancock gives them a legit 5 with no. 4 upside. Peete, a former 1st round pick, is the wildcard of this trade and gives a boost to a middling farm system where Lawler is about to graduate.

Mariners trade RHP Michael Morales, RHP Juan Burgos to the Twins for LHP Danny Coloumbe

M's Rationale: They need to add another shutdown, high level reliever. Coloumbe has been awesome this year, pitching to a 0.68 ERA and 0.938 WHIP over 27 innings.

Twins Rationale: Since they likely aren't figuring on playoff spot in '25, they move Coloumbe as he's a pure rental for some young, controlled arms to a farm that needs to add more pitching depth. Burgos can slot right into their bullpen today or they can further develop him... he's got some nice upside.

Roster:

1. JP Crawford SS
2. Julio Rodriguez CF
3. Cal Raleigh C
4. Randy Arozarena LF
5. Eugenio Suarez 3B
6. Jorge Polanco DH
7. Dom Canzone/Luis Robert RF
8. Luke Raley/Mitch Garver 1B
9. Cole Young 2B

Bench: Garver C/1B, Robert OF/DH, Miles Mastruboner Util

Some roster explanations:

1B: I have been searching far and wide for an answer at 1B to platoon alongside Luke Raley. There is almost nothing available, but the answer might have been under my nose the entire time. Mitch Garver hit for an .886 OPS in June, mostly against LHP. He's now up to a 115 wRC+ against lefties on the season and he could easily slot into playing 1B on days where lefties start instead of DHing where those duties can be assumed by Polanco, Robert, what have you. Solano is a likely DFA under this plan as he's cold again and his inability to hit lefties hurts this team.

RF: As explained earlier, Robert is the perfect platoon partner in right for Canzone and offers a ton more with his defense and base running late in games.

I am DFAing Casey Legumina and Donovan Solano off the roster. I am optioning Ben Williamson to AAA and potentially adding him as a September call up so he can experience the playoff push.

Pitching Staff:

1. Bryan Woo
2. Logan Gilbert
3. George Kirby
4. Luis Castillo
5. Logan Evans/Bryce Miller (whoever)

CL: Andres Munoz
HL: Matt Brash, Gabe Spierer, Danny Coloumbe
ML: Steven Wilson, Carlos Vargas, Eduard Bazardo, Trent Thornton

Thanks for putting in thee work.

I like the Robert platoon angle. He is an upgrade over Moore. I am not sure if/when Robles returns but this makes the club better. I kind of would push for Miles to go vs Moore because Moore has been a + bench guy that plays everywhere except C. But, the M's could call up Rivas, Taylor etc.

Saurez: I think that is a good package for him. You are trading basically 3 top 100/ top 100 adjacent prospects.

Danny Coloumbe: I had him in off season plans. Burgos has developed into a good BP prospect. But you gotta pay to play.

Well done. Make it so #1!

Good stuff.

If they get a bat and a high leverage arm I'm satisfied with that.

No. 1....make it so!

Oh, and did Young's little hot streak talk you out of going after a 2B?

If you take his 1st 6 games away, over the last 30 games he is .297 .351 .406 .757 and accumulated 1 WAR during those 30 games.

I just don't know if he can maintain that level or not. If so?

I just calculated his WAR/162 based on his 35 games sample and it is paced for 4.2WAR :o .

I would love for them to upgrade at 2B, but I don't think they have any intention to.

Young's lack of contact w. limited power wasn't looking great. Generally that's not a good sign for a rookie but I'm glad he's be able to put some hard contact out there. His savant page has gotten better... a few weeks back it was horrific.

Nice work.

The plan addresses proper priorities with the addition of two relievers.

You can get Austin Hayes from the Reds who is hitting .372/.426/.721 1.146 OPS against LHP for a lot less$$$ and more productivity than Roberts. Plus it is known he can play all 3 OF positions whereas Robert's never has

Hayes was on my mind, but Cincinnati may go for it and they're talking like they're buyers.

Hayes also has a mutual club option that Cinci may want to pick up next year.

Does Austin Hays have a wRC+ of 231 (with a .441 BABIP) against left-handers this year?
