Most underrated and overrated pitchers and position players in Mariners history
This is something I just thought of, what Mariner did we not appreciate nearly as much as we should have and who wasn't really as good as he was made out to be.
You'll probably have to go back a ways as in today's game we're more sophisticated about who's good and who isn't.
My most underrated pitcher in Mariner history is Jim Beattie. https://www.baseball-reference.com/play ... ji01.shtml From 1981 - 1984 he was actually really good. ERA of 3.48 pitching half his games in the Kingdome for dogshit teams. Nobody remembers this though because his record was only 33-45. If he'd pitched for good teams he might have been a 20-game winner.
My most underrated position player is Ken Phelps. https://www.baseball-reference.com/play ... ke01.shtml He rarely played against lefties, but from 1984 - 1988 he had an OPS of .916. Not only did he hit for power, but he had a great eye. Imagine having that guy in the 2025 lineup. Not only that, but as Frank Costanza will always remind everyone, we got a pretty good player in exchange for him.
My most overrated pitcher is (gasp) Mark Langston. https://www.baseball-reference.com/play ... ma01.shtml This was a tough one, but he had three good years with us and two where he really sucked, yet he was treated like the Randy Johnson (who of course is who he eventually was traded for) of his time.
My most overrated player is Jim Presley. https://www.baseball-reference.com/play ... ji01.shtml He was regarded as a premier power-hitting third baseman but in truth he had the worst BB/K ratios of anyone in the '80s and once he lost his pop at 26 he was terrible.

Yeah, I always sort of felt Beattie got more credit than deserved so that probably proves it right there. He was your good pitcher on a shitty team deal. I can't pull players out of my ass the way you can but how about Norm Charlton? Does that seem a stretch since he does get a ton of credit. Its just that i look at 2001, how did they go from a 100 win team to a 116 win team? I have always felt he doesn't get enough credit for that upper stratosphere they reached that season. Terms of Mark Langston, a lot of it is going to do with 1987. He holds the record for innings pitched doesn't he, 272, 262 strikeouts, gold glove. That season he was Randy before Randy. Hisashi Iwakuma underrated?

I wonder if Beattie feels like he wasted his career pitching for the Mariners. For some guys back in those days it was an opportunity that they otherwise wouldn't have had with other teams, but for guys like Beattie, Rick Honeycutt, Floyd Bannister et al, they probably couldn't wait to get out of Seattle and actually have a chance at postseason play. Unfortunately, Beattie got hurt so his career was over in '86.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Wed Sep 10, 2025 11:31 pmYeah, I always sort of felt Beattie got more credit than deserved so that probably proves it right there. Most underated position player is Robinson Cano. The way he went out left a bad taste in everyone's mouth but he was extremely productive while in Seattle. Despite only being here 5 years He is 6th on the Franchise bWAR leader board for position players ahead of revered guys like Buhner, Davis, Cameron and Olerud. The guys ahead of him are 4 HOF Caliber players and Kyle Seager who had an 11 year career.
Most underrated pitcher is Mike Moore. There is a clear top five for M's pitchers consisting of Felix, Moyer, Randy, Garcia and Langston. Mike Moore 6th in Wins behind those 5 and ranks 4th in Innings and fWAR ahead of Langston and Garcia.
Most overrated position player is Dan Wilson. He is in the M's Hall of fame but his numbers were very mediocre especially for the Steroid era. among all the hitters in franchise history he is 17th in fWAR only one win ahead of Zunino. He is 35th in Batting average, 20th in HR and 54th in OPS smack dab in the middle between Dylan Moore and Jeffrey Leonard.
Most overrated pitcher is Chris Bosio He had a bit of a cult hero status which was helped out by his no hitter. I think he is thought of fondly by many Mariners fans but over all he was really pretty bad. He was 27-31 with a 4.43 ERA for the M's and Just 5.8 WAR in 4 years.

Cano underrated? No way, Cap, he was regarded as a superstar when he was in Seattle.Captain 97 wrote: ↑Thu Sep 11, 2025 10:52 pmMost underated position player is Robinson Cano. Moore is interesting. #1 overall pick who sucked his first three seasons but was good in three of his last four years with us Too bad we couldn't keep him for another couple years but he made the right choice to leave with his two wins in the '89 World Series.
Wilson is an outstanding choice for Most Overrated, especially when you add in his 0-42 streak in postseason play. Maybe even better than my Presley pick.
Bosio was indeed pretty much blah other than his no-hitter. It's actually pretty difficult to pick a Most Overrated pitcher.

Oh, I loved the guy and as a teenager I thought he was one of the best in the game. But he did have two crummy years out of his five-plus seasons with us and he walked a lot of guys which led to some unattractive ERAs. Like Moore, it would have been nice to keep him around longer once he got his control issues sorted out. We did get a good return though when we traded him.Captain 97 wrote: ↑Thu Sep 11, 2025 11:02 pmLangston Led the League in Strikeouts 3 times in the 5 years he was with the M's. Yuck. I was sitting behind and off to the right of the guy who caught the first of these on opening night '86. https://www.facebook.com/Mariners/video ... 488514147/

You ask pretty much any fan to name the top 10 Mariners of all time and not one is going to mention Cano. On the contrary I see people call him a bad signing all of the time and using him as justification for why the M's shouldn't sign big time free agents.
