Lost to the Padres, 7-1.
Kade Anderson started and took the loss - that should tell you how he pitched.
Brendan Donovan had two hits, singles.
CF Luke Raley had a solo HR.
SS Brock Rodden had the only other hit.
2B Ryan Bliss played and coaxed the only walk.
Enerson Hancock pitched 2.2 innings, 4 K's.

Kade Anderson made his Cactus League debut, pitching into the second inning and getting charged with two runs on three hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Anderson worked around a one-out single in the first, striking out the side. He allowed a soft groundball single to start the second and gave up a double to Jake Cronenworth on a 3-2 fastball. His replacement, Houston Roth, struggled

Box score made it look like he didn't pitch any in the 2nd. As he didn't record an out, the spring training box score made it as if all the damage was done in the 1st. I still have plenty of faith in the rookie, and I take this outing with a grain of salt.

OK, I don't bother with box scores or watching the game. But I do insistently read articles. The impression from those. .

“Really good to see Kade out there,” Mariners manager Dan Wilson said. “I thought in the first inning, obviously, striking out the side, looked pretty impressive. And really good to see him compete like that. Second inning, a little bit different. I think probably wanted to attack the zone a little bit more. But outside of that, I thought it was just an outstanding first outing for him.”

Cal on Anderson
Cal Raleigh was effusive: “Very impressive. So he can locate the ball, he can command it, he can throw off-speed in the zone for strikes. There’s not…I mean there’s going to be a learning curve, for sure, he was just a little picky around the zone, but for the most part I thought he threw the ball great, especially for the first time out.” (In an extremely Cal move, he used the opportunity to take a shot at his bro to provide additional context on Anderson’s performance, “I think Logan gave up 10 runs in his first spring training game.”)

Hancock looked good as well
But what he’s shown so far this spring has been a marriage of the 2023 velo with the 2024-2025 movement. It’s a promising development for a guy whose fastball is coming in harder, and whose sweeper was getting all the praise from Jerry Dipoto on the broadcast. To be sure, I’ve been burned too many times by Emerson Hancock seeming to improve, but Emerson Hancock seems to have improved.

It's certainly plausible that he's improved something over the offseason. He's more of a veteran pitcher at this point, his health issues seemingly in the rear view mirror. It would be nice to see him kind of step up and seize a job in the bullpen.
