Emerson and the roster

Post by Donn Beach » Thu Apr 02, 2026 1:13 am

So Dipoto spoke to their plans

He's not sitting in Tacoma this season
"He will contribute heavily to this season,” Mariners president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto said. “And I thought that was the case before we signed him.”
The deal is they want to expose him to more left handed pitching. AAA has some veteran left handed pitching
"Once he checks that box, there's a real chance that he's helping the day after,” Dipoto said, “because he's pretty special kid, and I think everybody in that clubhouse believes he belongs there.”
“We're going to find out,” Dipoto said. “Like I told him today, we have no hard date. We had no plan as to, if we get this done -- it's tomorrow, it's next week, or it's even this month. But I suspect that he will be a big leaguer sooner than later.”

How is it going to impact the lineup
"Donnie's versatility made it such a priority for us to acquire him,” Dipoto said, “because he allowed us to do a lot of creative things with the other players on the field.
Donovan' has admitted he's struggling a bit with 3rd. That could impact things

Oh good, a day against tough lefties in AAA, then he's good to go.

Hey, they should have tried that with Canzone so they didnt need to sign Refsnyder.

Maybe Raley could go for a day against a tough AAA lefty.

I think they're really onto something here.

It's not like he really struggles against lefties
Over his first two seasons in the Minors, Emerson hit .273 with a .769 OPS against lefties -- decent numbers, which dovetails into Dipoto’s assertion that it’ll be more about reps than production. And Emerson’s first homer in the Rainiers’ season opener was against a lefty.

I don't understand why DiPoto has to say anything here. I mean, there's absolutely no reason to give this level of granularity on the development plan for a prospect.

More from Dipoto. It's that he would hit FA at an unusually young age and would be quite valuable. It's tying up those seasons. And it's not about getting a deal, it's being fair to both parties. Says they approached his agent during ST, that seems incredibly quick work. Says they approached a number of players.

The deal is back loaded, doesn't begin to kick in until 2028. It's not affecting this seasons budget or next. It's tying up the arbitration years and the an additional three seasons of his FA

I don’t care it is dumb business. Pretending he is a sure thing is beyond fucking stupid. JK was ranked 1st or 2nd in the outfield rankings along with Julio. Colt is ranked 7th in SS. OF has L,R, and CFbut they group them all together. JK had 1 1/2 way decent year. Smoak, Ackley, Hultzen, Big unit #2, we have had too many can’t miss prospects miss to be anything but against this move.

If he was can't miss it be even more expensive. There's a point where they decided it made sense. You're doing it for a dollar, you've not doing it for $500 MIL. The Brewers sign Pratt to a $50 MIL contact. He's the 70th ranked prospect . Seems reasonable between the pair. It's figuring the odds

And this has nothing at all to do with guys like Ackley or Smoak, again this is about a guy that if it goes well would hit FA at 27. That makes for an unusually valuable FA. That's what they are betting on, the age factor. That and they decided he's going to stick at SS.

That's what they decided to bet on his value as a guy with good power and bat to ball skills that has the defense to play SS that's going to hit his prime as a 27 year old FA. It's not about the current roster or budget, it's gambling on the future.
