Had 9 WAR, hit .358, 36 hrs, 123 rbi’s
NY writers stole it for Jeter.
Absolute injustice.
A bit of modern baseball history for your edification.

And he even had 59 PAs in 1994 as and 18 yo and would have exceed his rookie status then if not for the strike. So insane.

A-Rod was robbed of the MVP in 1996. Won the batting title hitting .358, led the league with 141 Runs scored and posted a 9.3 WAR and finished second to Juan Gonzalez with a 3.8 WAR. Of course WAR was not a stat at the time. He bested Gonzalez in every single offensive stat except for HR and RBI and he did it while playing shortstop.
That was an insane year.
Jim Thome hit .311 with a 1.062 OPS and finished 15th.
Brady Anderson hit .297 with 50 Bombs and finished 9th in the voting.
Big Mack led the League in both OBP and SlG. with a .467 and .730 respectively. His 1.198 OPS is the second highest of any AL player since 1957 and it only got him 7th place.
Griffey led the League with a 9.7 WAR and finished 4th.
There were 9 players in the AL that year with an OPS over 1.000. In the last 10 years there have only been 12 players total in the AL that have managed to post a 1.000 OPS.

I remember AROD at the plate that year. He had no fear. He didn't just look like a major league hitter. He looked like he was born to be in that batter's box. It's an enduring memory for me and a big part of how I evolved into a serious baseball fan.

1996 was a complete debacle, the only reason Gonzalez won was because the Rangers made the playoffs. That really was it. A-Rod's only competition that year was Junior.
A-Rod also could have won it in 1998 and definitely should have won it in 2000.

Thems the rules..
A player is considered an MLB rookie unless they have exceeded 130 at-bats, 50 innings pitched, or 45 total days on an active Major League roster (excluding time on the Injured List or after Sept. 1) in a previous season. These thresholds are cumulative across a player's career, and they must be met to qualify for rookie awards like the Rookie of the Year.

Chicken shit rule, at the tender age of 20, especially, his was a rookie year for the Ages.
