New forum member shared a great intro about themselves in response to our registration questions to weed out bots. They gave permission to share, please welcome Jay (not Couer d'Alene) to the board!
Hi, registering for the Mariners forum,

I'm from Salinas, CA, now reside in Tacoma.  At 12 in 1972, I was pitching "tennis baseball" against the garage door with my friends and heard on radio Gonzalo Marquez lift the A's over the Tigers in G1 of the 72 ALCS.  Marquez went on to pinch hitting infamy, the A's won 3 straight WS, and I became obsessed.  Cards, pulp mags and weeklys like Baseball Digest and Sporting News, numerous HOF autographs, stat memorization, playing the game - these are signs of addiction.  I must have grown tired of winning because I switched allegiance to the Red Sox in 75.  Perhaps this was pre-conditioning for Mariner fanship, given the outcome of that season.  Went to numerous A's & Giants games.  Marriage, kids, and life came.  After moving to Seattle in 93, I managed to see number of games at the Kingdome - saw Arod hit 2 triples in a game as a rookie, Randy pitching against the "...25 Yanks..." if you remember the banner someone put up.  Watched the Kingdome get blown up from West Seattle.  Voted against a new stadium but we got it anyway and I love the place.  It will always be Safeco Field to me.  After divorce in 99, I met Kristin, the best girlfriend a guy could dream of - she had half season Mariner tickets - 41 games.  2 glorious years at field level in section 126, row 28, seats 11 & 12, looking down the 3rd base line, for the 2000 & 2001 seasons.  We literally walked up the front entrance under the bats and our seats were steps away!  The 2001 season - it was just fever, crazy. I caught several backhand bags of peanut from the "Peanut Man".  Favorite game I ever saw - Rickey Henderson reaching base 5 times - 5 BB, 2 SB, 2 R - all without an official AB!   Saw Arod's return to Safeco - the Monopoly money game - so much fun!  We often went to Palisade after games.  Many other games my sons were there too (and yes they came to Palisade a lot).  I bought 4 seats in the nosebleed section by the Hit it Here Cafe in 2003.  Now I'm retired.  Was glad to find this forum which I've been reading for about 3 years, and really like the dedicated M's fans.  I bring true fanship, baseball history and legend to the forum, and of course, passion for the Mariners.

Jay

Welcome Jay! But you're gonna have to learn to swear to keep up with Seth and some others. Disclaimer: This team sometimes demands that we swear.

What is your online name going to be?

I will take a wild guess and say it is going to be Peepaw. Welcome!

My ex-wife could swear to shame the devil. I usually choose not to go there but that Piggy Back game - that's what got me to register and you shoulda heard me that night.

Yeah, it's Peepaw, so named by my 3 year old grandson. I think it means "highly intelligent, good looking grandfather"

Thanks for the greetings.

Welcome "Peepaw" Jay. Sounds like you'll be a fine addition to our esteemed forum group.
Say what you think, spray what you feel. Root for the M's and hate the Asstroh's.

I have no clue anymore as to when I dipped my toes into the Forum in the old Seattle Time's site. I do remember lurking for 3-4 years before I dared register and post. At that time Darren/D-Train already had a bazillion posts and that was just on his 3rd? moniker. By the time the Times shut us down I think I was Top-5 in posts, give or take. You know, competitive...needed numbers.

Peepaw reminded me of an old-time player named Charlie "Old Paw Paw" Maxwell, from the Detroit Tigers. My Dad liked him and he was still there in 1960, when the Indians traded my guy, Rocky Colavito, to Detroit for the A.L. batting champion, Harvey Kuenn. I was 8.
Maxwell was from Paw Paw, Michigan. He died in December, 2024 at the age of 97 and is buried in a cemetery in Paw Paw.

Paw Paw is about 20 miles from Kalamazoo, where I grew up.

Cheers!

Funny, I'm not one for remembering stuff but I have a vivid memory of first joining. I remember where I was and a chat with Terry. He was a gracious greeter.

Thanks Rocky! I hope I can contribute to some extent. Not sure I'll live long enough to amass 81K posts! Arghh, the Asstros...shoulda been a dozen or more people banned for life, the Commissioner later regretted not imposing more severe penalties, and now Beltran the ringleader is in the HOF.

I like old baseball history. I carry the HOF banner for Rusty Staub. 2716 hits in a consistent 23 year career. Nearly 1500 RBI.
