A potential trade target for the M's

Casey Schmitt, 3B SF Giants

Schmitt is currently DHing for the Giants as he's blocked at 3B by Matt Chapman and his albatross contract. He can also play SS, albeit poorly. But even so, he's blocked there by Willy Adames and his bad contract as well.

Schmitt is having a breakout year with the bat... slashing .294/.332/.548/.880 with 12 homers in 51 games. Where he would really help the M's is that he can start at 3B vs lefties and serve as a lefty killer late in games. He's boasting a 1.092 OPS vs lefties thus in '26 and His 211 wRC+ vs the dexterity is 5th in baseball.

Pulling a Harmony... this SF Giants blogger ^^ believes Schmitt to be the Giants no. 1 trade chip at the deadline. He suggests that the Giants could sell high on his atypical success at the plate in the hopes of becoming better down the road. The Giants are also one of the worst teams in baseball and will likely be sellers at the deadline given a very competitive NL West and NL as a whole.

Schmitt is 27 years old and will enter Arb 1 next season. He could serve as the M's starting 3B and push Donovan to more of the utility role he played in St. Louis.

Schmitt would be a nice pickup, except that the emergence of Emerson is already going to push Donovan toward being a utility player, and neither they, JP, or Young are going anywhere anytime soon.

It's kind of wild how bad Buster has been at being a GM.

I have started noting teams and potential targets for this year but I have no solid targets. But JP, Colt, Young, and Donavan.

I think we don’t have a match

Yeah was going to say we don't have room at all this season assuming Donovan isn't permanently disabled from playing baseball like Evan White but if they can somehow make it work, then he would be a great fit next season with Donovan in LF.

2027
Donovan LF
Emerson SS
Julio CF
Raley RF
Cal C
Schmitt 3B
Naylor 1B
Canzone DH
Young 2B

All I’ll say is, in the Dipoto era… have we ever entered or exited the playoffs thinking… “hmmm, we definitely did not need another bat.”

But yeah, DT… this is more of a forward thinking trade anticipating them moving on from JP and Emerson to SS. Plus every infielder we have is a left handed bat. There’s no flexibility.

I’m a little surprised he has jumped this far in value considering this performance is more of a blip compared to the rest of his career.

I get that 3B is a more coveted position, but Dom has been a consistent 130 wRC+ hitter for a couple years now.

I could see a straight up trade or maybe add a smaller piece. The Giants could likely be patient with a Logan Evans for instance. MLBTV is def a “what have you done for me lately” valuation.

Yeah, it was like putting a fan in charge. I think they really made a conscious decision to reject the new age analytical approach when they moved on from Zaidi, decided to go old school with Buster

When I think of Zaidi I think of Grant Bisbee. He referred to Zaidi dealing with Dipoto as if he's opening Dipoto's refrigerator asking, are you going to eat that?
