Chapman?
Heard Brock and Salk discussing him as a trade candidate this morning. He is 33 and is owed 100 Million for the next 4 years after this season. Brock was saying if you could get the Giants to eat half the remaining money it would be worth it. Either Donovan or JP is already going to need to move to a utility role once they come back so adding Chapman would probably mean JP would be cut. On this surface it looks good Chapman has a 3.2 WAR already this year. However, most of his value is defensive. His bat is almost exactly matching what JP has done. Both have a 119 OPS+. I am thinking I would rather have a better offensive upgrade there especially if you are going to commit for multiple years.

No way they cut JP. For better or worse, richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, until death do them part, the M's front office is married to JP. They believe him to be the emotional leader of the team, and there is evidence to prove that. Look at how they have struggled since JP went on the DL.Captain 97 wrote: ↑Tue Jun 16, 2026 8:26 pmHeard Brock and Salk discussing him as a trade candidate this morning. Randy and Julio are locked in the lineup and You can't bench Raley/Canzone against Righties with the way that they are hitting so the outfield and DH is pretty much set. So either you have to get rid of an infielder or settle for picking up a right handed platoon hitter at the deadline. unless you want to send Cole Young back down to AAA, Cutting JP is really the only option to add a legitimate full time bat.Bil522 wrote: ↑Tue Jun 16, 2026 8:41 pmNo way they cut JP. Re: Chapman?
Cap, I just don't see the Mariners going after an aging (albeit still good) third baseman this season with the emergence of Emerson. It's created an infield of all-positive players other than Naylor.
If anything, DiPoto should be pursuing right-hand outfield pop. Possibilities include Byron Buxton, Taylor Ward, and, if he lifts his ban on Japanese players, Seiya Suzuki. Ward is probably the best possibility (meaning cheapest) as his power is way down but he still gets on base a lot and he could easily regain that pop.
We brought up Casey Schmitt a couple weeks ago and apparently he's played 22 games in the outfield this season so he definitely goes on the list if he can ably play outfield and third.
The one drawback is that if we get a full-time player, Raley or Canzone would have to be dealt.

This won't happen. You have to remember that when Brock talks about baseball, he's likely still thinking in football terms to some extent where you can just cut guys. But this front office and ownership just aren't going to acquire a 33 year old with that much time left on his contract, even if the Giants were willing to eat half of the remaining obligation.
Re: Chapman?
Exactly. It goes against everything they believe in, in terms of Sustainability. They are probably laughing at the Giants situation and taking Giant sighs of relief vs. thinking about bailing them out from owing a bunch of bums Hundreds of millions...GL_Storm wrote: ↑Tue Jun 16, 2026 9:22 pmThis won't happen. Re: Chapman?
I think he grasps the economics. If the Giants picked up half the contract it's a pretty good deal. Then you need like 6-7 WAR out of him, that's not an outrageous amount. It's the kind of move a truly contending team can make. The question is who are you trading for that? Mostly what it's about is he needs something to talk about everyday just like us.
Re: Chapman?
It isn't a lot for a normal org but they would MUCH rather pay Celesten $800k from 2027-29. And we Don't need a 3B this season as has been mentioned. There will be a logjam as it is when Donovan returns...Donn Beach wrote: ↑Wed Jun 17, 2026 1:31 pmI think he grasps the economics. If the Giants picked up half the contract it's a pretty good deal. I'm not gonna speculate over them doing it or not. But I don't think that's what it turns on. I don't think the Giants eat half the contract. They certainly aren't going to just pay him to play for the Mariners. If they would then who knowsD-train wrote: ↑Wed Jun 17, 2026 4:04 pmIt isn't a lot for a normal org but they would MUCH rather pay Celesten $800k from 2027-29. Re: Chapman?
Im trying to think of trades along those lines. I don't think it happens very often where a team pays a huge chunk of a contract. The Mariners sent $20 mil with Cano. That was considered a pretty dramatic bailout.
Canó had $120 million remaining on his 10-year, $240 million contract at the time. In addition to sending cash, the Mariners also took on the remaining contracts of outfielders Jay Bruce and Anthony Swarzak from the Mets to balance the financial scale of the swap
