8/4/26 Eye on the Tiger Gamethread.Series to save season

I though I did this... but I'm starting it again. I'm very excited about today's game and really hoping for a miracle today!!!!! Really hoping!!!! and when I say hoping, may I say, hoping is an understatement. Both teams sit around .470–.480 and are fighting for playoff positioning in their divisions. This is a mammoth game for two kids called Emerson.

Melton: Dominant breakout/young arm (age ~25). 6-1, 1.75 ERA, 0.93 WHIP in 67.0 IP across 11 starts. Strong recent form (e.g., 7 scoreless vs. BAL with 5 K; multiple starts allowing ≤2 ER). Low walk rate relative to results, solid K numbers (~8 K/9), and has limited hard contact. Last few outings show consistency with limited baserunners. He has been one of Detroit’s most effective starters.

Can the Mariners salvage this season? Can the tiny spark over the last two games become a roaring flame?
Prior to the trade deadline there was a clear advantage to Detroit on paper. Melton’s elite early-season numbers and recent dominance make him a tough matchup for Seattle’s offense in a pitcher’s park. The M's lost 2 of 3 in Detroit two months ago. But generally head to head has been pretty even. The teams are way different from June, Tigers dealing with absences like Kerry Carpenter, Flaherty/Verlander. The Mariners have made several changes and will have a revamped lineup with some key departures like Garver.... key arrivals like Parades, Taylor Ward, Donovan Ward....This is Emerson Hancock's first start as a regular member of the roster today, IMO. It's his job to keep or lose. It's a rebuild engine with no time to road test and tweak the various systems.... So many changes, so much urgency...
Both clubs are in the mix for wild-card or division positioning; this series carries weight for momentum heading into the stretch.

Scouting bottom line for Mariners: Tough opener. Melton is pitching at a high level and should keep runs in check if he maintains command. Seattle needs a good start against Detroit’s balanced lineup and need to manufacture runs. I'd. like to see Ward high in the lineup because he is a pitch count wrecker.... a short outing from Melton would open the door; otherwise, it leans toward a low-scoring Tigers advantage.

Looking for help today on this gamethread....... what are todays roster additions and subtractions? What are the expected lineups?

Man, I was thinking we really should sweep this series but this Melton kid's been dealing. Hancock's going to have to throw a lot of zeroes tonight.

You should hope so, but I have a feeling it will be a "very depressed team" because of the "breaking up of the team".
Oh boo hoo.

Whether the Mariners make the playoffs/win the division will be determined by how 29 and 44 play. You can go through the trade deadline moves over and over and talk about the supporting cast, but 29 and 44's performance will dictate the last 2 months, just like it has the first 4.

I wish them well.

That's the thing, you can't just in July make trades that turn over half your lineup, it's up to a lot of the guys you went into the season with. Cal just by himself is on pace to reduce the Mariners' win total by about EIGHT games, and Julio and Naylor each about three games from 2025. A 14-game reduction in performance by three players. That's to say that if these three were duplicating what they did in 2025 (and yeah, with Cal it's not realistic), the team would be about 69-44, which is what the Dodgers are.
