OT World Cup

Post by D-train » Sat Jul 06, 2019 7:16 pm

Such controversy.

First it was the 13-0 drubbing of the Thai team in which they celebrated goals 11, 12 and 13 like the were game winners in the final (not a big deal)

Then Rapinoe had the feud with Trump saying she wouldn't go to the White house (her prerogative) but then she accepted an invite to tour the House of Reps from the Socialist AOC. (she should have accepted both or declined both) Its the US national team not the Socialist team or the liberal team. She basically completely alienated about half the fan base.

Then Morgan raised some ire by taking a pseudo sip of tea after she scored a goal and says men wouldn't be criticized for it.

The only problem with the narrative that they are only criticized because they are women is that men get criticized for what some view as disrespectful celebrations and taunting all the time. They even have taunting penalties in most men's sports. This was funny though:
"I feel that there is some sort of double standard for females in sports," Morgan said, "to feel like we have to be humble in our successes and have to celebrate, but not too much or in a limited fashion. You see men celebrating all over the world in big tournaments, grabbing their sacks or whatever it is. And when I look at sipping a cup of tea, I am a little taken aback by the criticism."
Now Rapinoe is pissed off that there are two other Men's finals for tournaments that less than 1% of the US population has ever heard of..

Yet here is her quote about the criticism over the celebrations.
“Wah, wah, wah. We’re at the World Cup. I don’t think anyone truly believes we disrespect the game or our opponents. What do you want us to do? We work hard. We like to play hard. ”
Back at ya Megan, "Wah, wah, f-ing wah."

I was interested the last few times the U.S. was in the women's World Cup final, dating back to summer of '99 when they played China, but not any more. They are just too arrogant, whiny, and self-righteous to be likable any more. I am actually hoping they lose to whoever they are playing tomorrow.

Of course Sue Bird had to rush to the defense of her innocent victim girlfriend.

Argh with respect, but I disagree with almost everything you guys are saying on this thread lol. I speak for all women in this matter, and as a man who usually laughs at the left, the ladies are right on this one.

They are getting hosed; the purse for this entire tournament is like 30M. The men's purse for last year's WC was something like 400M. France got almost 40M for winning. Plus they are scheduling the women's WC Final at a crappy time and further making it more meaningless by scheduling less important men's soccer matches in the same market.

If you like soccer, the elite women's national teams are playing a technically perfect playbook version of the way soccer is meant to be played; the way the game is taught, or should be. Way less pissing and moaning and diving than in the men's game. Sportsmanship like you hardly ever see in a men's WC. They should market it better. If you don't like how abrasive some of the players are, think how they feel knowing they have to follow different rules for way less money than the men do in the same sport. The deck is stacked against them in FIFA, just like in corporate America or some other slippery venue. Tune in for the final. Think the Dutch might beat us by a goal, they are solid and it is always hard to repeat, but whatever the outcome you will see a world-class match.

I do think the money disparity is the one legit complaint. They should pick their battle and focus their efforts on that. Enough of the contrived slights. There will always be people complaining about perceived taunting. Moe Gibbs doesn't even like bat flips.

If she wouldn't have brought up the other men's tourneys nobody would have cared or noticed. Also, don't pick a fight with Trump and then act all shocked they he retaliated and play the victim. She knew what she was doing.

Looking forward to the match.

I’m rooting for the US women, but I’m betting on the Dutch. The odds (+$765) were too good to pass up.

The only team that has a legit beef on the money disparity issue are the US women. None of the the other teams earn close to what the men's teams do. If we are going for parity here perhaps the women should pay half of half to the boys Under 14 team that beat theAustralia Women's team 7-0. It gets worse when you hear that FIFA lied about viewing figures. A big grudge match between Scotland and England was billed as a sellout till the real figures came out and it turned out it was only a third of the stadium sold out.

The standard of women's football is literally worse than some men's semi pro teams.
