WHAT THE FUCK!????
In a rare swap between division rivals who are both in postseason contention, the Mariners and Astros are in the process of finalizing a trade that would send infielder Abraham Toro and a reliever from Houston to Seattle, tweets Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times. MLB.com’s Brian McTaggart adds that righty Kendall Graveman and recently designated-for-assignment Rafael Montero are headed to Houston. The Mariners will add veteran reliever Joe Smith in the deal.
The two teams are playing one another right now, meaning the four players need only head to the other side of the stadium once the deal is finalized. In fact, Divish points out that Toro is already on the field — in a Mariners uniform.
It’s a rather stunning development to see the Mariners trade Graveman, who has been dominant in a high-leverage role this season, to their chief divisional competitor. That said, Graveman is a free agent at season’s end, and in Toro, the Mariners are acquiring four and a half seasons of control over an infielder who has long been considered one of Houston’s more promising young hitters. Toro hasn’t yet pieced things together in limited big league action, but he’s decimated Triple-A pitching and posted strong numbers in pitcher-friendly Double-A settings. That matters little to the Mariners’ clubhouse, however, and Divish rather unsurprisingly tweets that the decision to trade Graveman was not well-received among Seattle players.
