JS struck a pretty good deal with the Darnold contract.

In other words, if Darnold is unable to duplicate his 2024 performance and regresses back to the lower-tier quarterback he has been for the majority of his career, the Seahawks could release him in the week after Super Bowl LX — assuming he is healthy — and not owe him any additional money or carry any dead salary cap money in future seasons.

It makes the contract a one-year deal with two option years for the Seahawks.

That is relatively low-risk business for the Seahawks. Which is also probably smart business for them.

Spotrac says he is guaranteed $55 mil and Overthecap says it is $37.5 mil. Neither site is showing what his cap hit is for 2025.

As I understand it, the only guaranteed money is the 2025 salary which would be $37.5 mil

Here's a rough explanation of the contract...

https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootba ... -5-million

Apparently they can cut him right after the SB without any cap hits, but if he doesn't pass a physical at that time they will have to pay him $17.5 mil.

This guy doesn't think they got better
Matt Johnson of Sportsnaut thinks the team got significantly worse.

Johnson previously had the Seahawks as a top-10 team, but had the Seahawks fall 11 spots in his latest rankings. Vinnie Iyer of The Sporting News, however, moved the team up two spots after their free agent moves

The reports about darnolds contract being easy to get out of were incorrect
Putting this all together, the initial reports that Darnold’s deal had an easy out after one year were off base, and in reality the contract is effectively:

One year, $54M ($13.4M 2025 cap hit plus $40.6M 2026 dead money)
Two years, $66.5M ($13.4M 2025 cap hit plus $33.9M 2026 cap hit plus $19.2M 2027 dead money)
Three years, $105M ($13.4M 2025 cap hit plus $33.9M 2026 cap hit plus $44.9M 2027 cap hit plus $12.8M 2028 dead money)

They would save $25.7 mil against the cap for 2027 and $12.8 mil for 2028 if they cut him after two seasons. But yeah, he'll be here two seasons no matter how badly he plays.

I understand that's actually an unusual contact for JS, to essentially guarantee two years. It would imply they aren't drafting a QB this year

Though it's interesting they get the limited amount of visits, 30 and they used two of them on qbs

I would say that signing Drew Lock is a pretty good indication that they aren't going to draft a QB this year.
