Why Coaches Restricted WaterBuilding Toughness: Needing water was viewed as a sign of weakness or a lack of mental grit.Fear of Cramps: Medical myths at the time claimed that drinking fluids during heavy exercise caused bad stomach cramps.Salt Tablets: Athletes were given salt pills to help retain body fluids, even though medical science later proved these pills just sat poorly in the stomach.Change in CultureTragic Deaths: Fatal heatstrokes in the early 1960s—such as the deaths of players Reggie Grob and Mike Kelsey—forced a massive re-evaluation of safety standards.Invention of Gatorade: In 1965, researchers at the University of Florida developed Gatorade specifically to help the Florida Gators football team stay hydrated and replace lost electrolytes in the heat.Modern Guidelines: Sports organizations eventually changed their rules, making water constantly accessible during practices to protect players from heat exhaustion. If you'd like, I can share more about how sports science views hydration today or how heat safety rules changed in high schools and colleges.

Re: OT Record Mile Time
That was a bit before my time we got water breaks. Practices were still brutal. We did a 3 mile run before practice even started then we would drill for an hour and a half followed by full all out wrestling for 15 minutes and then close everything else out with wind sprints at the end. We weighed in before and after every practice and it was completely normal for me to lose 5 pounds every single practice. My record was 8 pounds. I would go home and drink a half gallon of Gatorade every night.

Re: OT Record Mile Time
I think I was a Soph in football when we had something like seven personal fouls one game. We ran basically all practices, had no water, and finished with slide and glides....on the track. It was brutal. Every coach on that team would be placed in front of a firing squad if that happened today, and my parents didn't even ask why my forearms were all scratched up.
I just did an online training that warned me if I don't teach the importance of proper form when sliding, I might lose my home and everything I own if a kid slides wrong, sprains and ankle and her mommy sues me for everything. OK, that wasn't EXACTLY how they phrased it, but pretty fucking close!
Not one kid I have coached in the last fifteen years would have made it fifteen minutes playing for the guys I played for. And I'm considered a hard ass!

To me, it's even more mind boggling that someone can maintain that speed over the course of a full mile. The speed alone is amazing, but the stamina. Unbelievable.
Re: OT Record Mile Time
That being said my HS Wrestling team won the State title in 1985. Meadowdale in Lynnwood. Literally every guy in every weight class was one of the best....Almost never losing..

I didn't get to do sports in high school. Mom died in 1964 when I was 11 and in 6th grade. Dad remarried 3 months later.
It wasn't one of those wicked stepmother things you read about in fairy tales but it was still unpleasant, stifling and a very negative experience.
I was the youngest of 4 boys. The oldest was already away in the Air Force. The next was graduating that June so that left the next brother and me to bear the weight of it all. At 16, I left home. I made it through high school, graduated, and became an extreme, pot smoking gym rat.
Lived in a trailer park (no, not down by the river) 5 miles from work. Unless I needed my car after, I'd run the 5 miles (mostly down hill) through the Western Michigan University campus to work. After work, I'd ride my bike home and reverse the next day. Joined 2 different health clubs. The evening one I'd play basketball pickup games for hours. Most teams picked me, not because I was great, but because I'd guard the other teams better players, usually giving up 2-4 inches and 20-40 pounds. I was just an annoying, pesky bitch on defense. I did breakaway for one-handed dunks infrequently.
Anyway, my 5-mile run (measured dozens of times on my car odometer), the one running downhill to work, I was usually 25 to 27 minutes. Then, I'd go into my downtown Kalamazoo morning gym and do 500 non-stop sit-ups on a slant board before work. Realize this was 50 years ago.
Thanks for allowing me to reminisce.
I was also playing fastpitch softball, racquetball, smoking lots of pot, growing my hair down to my ass and going to rock concerts:
REO Speedwagon
Blue Oyster Cult
Alice Cooper
The Who
Queen, etc.
.....and smoking lots of pot. Lots of girlfriends. Loved my hair and my athleticism and my charm
Now, bald, 250#s, 74 y.o., the stairs are a bitch. Whut happened? I'll tell you what happened: 49 years of Mariner baseball, that's what.

Re: OT Record Mile Time
Sorry to hear that Phil. Can't imagine. I had a Leave it to beaver childhood. Everything was perfect. Lived in the same home in Lynnwood from birth to 1987 when I was off to the UW. Mom didn't work until we were in Jr. High. Parents had their 63rd wedding anniversary in May. Mom's mind is almost gone and Dad just had a heart procedure. 2/3 the way to the Wizard of Oz. Maybe I am the Cowardly Lion. She told my sister in Law while my Dad was in the hospital that she used have a husband named Terry but doesn't know what ever happened do him. Terry is my Dad. She has only been married to him..rockycola wrote: ↑Thu Jul 30, 2026 10:02 pmI didn't get to do sports in high school. Mom died in 1964 when I was 11 and in 6th grade. Dad remarried 3 months later.
