You would have to go read through all the game threads from the past 3 years. I can recall several disparaging comments from games just this season. I suppose they could have all been made by one poster but i doubt it.
There has been a lot of it, maybe not necessarily bashing, but many that thought we should have taken Carter. Many of those guys have criticized Spoon. Not necessarily saying he sucks, but that he isn't living up to his draft slot and we should have taken Carter. And yeah, some in the Game Threads, but Game Threads are about as Bi Polar as they come! Mostly just guys venting to what they saw that second. Like sitting in a bar and yelling at the TV.

I personally have always disagreed on Spoon being a mistake. I think Carter is a douchbag and would have been bad for the Locker Room. I remember spending a lot of time discussing the collapse of the Eagles a few years ago, how they couldn't stop the run. Carter was a big part of the problem. The guy takes plays off...has a reputation for being lazy. Sorry, he didn't seem like a MM guy to me, and I have always felt like we have been better off with the D Line we have had and Spoon, than not having Spoon and adding Carter to our D Line. I have always felt that way though, even when our D was struggling to stop the run. I just felt it was more about fit and scheme. Something MM has done a much better job of than Pete did at the end because Pete refused to adapt. Play LBs back, run soft coverage and hope the other team makes a mistake. It was HORRIBLE to watch, and Carter wouldn't have been a difference maker in the results.

MM also doesn't fuck around. We couldn't stop the run so he traded both LBs. You don't see that shit very often. I think we'd be complaining about Carter FAR more than those that have complained about Spoon. But, again, I really just think it was those that were pissed we drafted him, saying it's all about up front. Which is true, but guys like Spoon and Emanwari have made a HUGE different in this defense. I've never been upset we took Spoon, not after the draft when I read up on him, and CERTAINLY not after I watched the kid play.
So we have Spoon AND Murphy instead of Carter. I'd say that's working out pretty well.

Great point. I do think that Carter's work ethic was an issue, as was his character. He was in trouble right after the draft because he posted on social media a clip of him with a ton of guns in his car, or some shit like that. He already cost his team by spitting on an opponent on like the first snap from scrimmage. He is an incredible talent that is wasting it with a piss poor attitude.

I'll cop to being a guilty party here. I don't think I was the only one.
Spoon's rookie season was in 2023 and Pete was still here. Right out of the blocks he had some big hits that seemed
subhuman for a man of his size, but that quickly ended as he probably was convinced he'd have a short career at 185lbs,
and never make it to his second "getting paid" contract if he kept that up - that and just trying to kill people leads
to a lot of missed tackles. During his rookie year under Pete, Spoon was often only on the field half the time. I
whined that was ridiculous for a #5 pick.

Last year, I was waiting for Spoon to break out, which I wasn't seeing. Meanwhile, fans were literally saying Spoon
was the best player on our defense, which really pissed me off. This wasn't me saying Spoon was a bust, but that
he was highly overrated and it pissed me off.

This year, I'm seeing more and more Spoon positively affecting the game. With his speed, he's an eraser like ET
used to be, even though they are in different positions. I have always liked Spoon as a person. He's easily the
funniest and best interview on the team. He might have a career as a comedic actor or standup after his playing
days are over. He's also movie-star handsome. There's no denying he's also bringing a type of joyous energy to
the team right now, which you don't have to draft a #5 to get, but it is a positive thing IMO

I can honestly say I was one of the morons who was yelling at the TV about us not taking Carter. You're 100% right though, and I'm certainly glad MM knows football a lot better than I do.

Oh, I wanted Carter too. Had nothing to do with Witherspoon - it's about context. We had the worst run defense in the league - and in no way did drafting Spoon help solve that. THAT'S why most people wanted Carter. Gotta build the trenches to control the run. Of course, that was under Carroll who clearly had zero vision form the team and just wanted more secondary guys, cause that's supposedly his specialty. Spoon has been great, but it's ass backwards to draft a safety first when you're getting gashed in the run game.
