Article on the "epidemic" of hamstring injuries with NFL players.

Two things of note

Players are pushing training to the edge
As an extra risk factor, athletes are constantly striving for that edge to be the fastest, strongest player on the field. The stronger they are, the faster, quicker and more powerful they are. However, if balance is lost and mobility takes a back seat, they put themselves at a greater risk.
Relatively Minor strains are going to be taken seriously because a weakened hamstring is even more susceptible to an actual tear
When an athlete tries to play through a "pulled" hamstring, the muscle fibers are already compromised and can fully tear if there is enough stress. That's why it is imperative to rest and rehabilitate.

Interesting, thanks. I think I need to become an NFL personal trainer with the mantra, "If you can touch your toes" you are in grave danger!"

Don't believe there is actual evidence that stretching is beneficial to reducing injuries. So yeah, don't bother with the toes

Good analogy on the race car tires. I was thinking race care engines but same principal. That makes sense.
I was kind of proud of it. Really I wanted to share the Mike Tyson workout thing, though - I just saw a video about it and thought it applied. That was his REAL workout routine. Insane.

It's football daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!

Doesn't stretching increase range of motion?

By 2014, Lauersen et al performed an enormous review of studies on stretching and injury prevention. They evaluated the results of 26,000 people who between them had experienced 3,500 injuries. They found that good balance reduced injury risk by 35%, better strength reduced injury risk by nearly 70% and stretching…. well stretching did not reduce injuries significantly at all (all types of stretching were looked at).

I'm inclined to agree with you somewhat. The other part of stretching is that you need to sufficiently warm up. And some individuals take longer to warm up their hamstrings than others. Maybe we should have heating pads installed in the locker rooms so they get warmed up before they go out for practice?

This is only my experience coaching different basketball players from middle school to NCAA College for the past 29 seasons, if I was able to take my players swimming at least once a week during the season, it cut in season injuries significantly every year I did it. Players always roll ankles on rebounds, but if you have been swimming consistently your injury will not be as bad. Never had hamstring injuries while swimming. I believe that if your muscles do the same thing all time, you will get injured if they are constantly used the same way. Swimming elongates the muscles and puts the load on the whole muscle, just not the one spot that is always being used.

Anyway, this is just my experience.

With all this data about stretching not mattering at all, I wonder if Ichiro knows just how much time he wasted over the course of his career.

Good point... it's interesting how it's really become a part of our culture. The joggers all doing their stretching.
