Next Franchise QB
Re: Next Franchise QB
Observations after Sunday Night game:
-I wish Seahawks had either Penix or Daniels
-Daniels needs to bulk up in the offseason or he'll have an RG3 type of short career. That guy is skinnier than spaghetti.

Watching Daniels is why I would like to have Justin Fields.

Re: Next Franchise QB
It seems to me that Geno had the ability to move around more than he did. Obviously not Lamar, not Daniels, and not even Fields. But for what ever reason he was very reluctant. I saw him many times throw incomplete when it appeared running would have gained positive yardage, and often times resulted in a first down instead of punt. I used to see this out of Jake Locker, and it was ALL Sark. Sark was telling him to be a pocket passer so he could be a high first round pick. Now look at who the high first round picks are? Mobile guys. Sark was wrong, and I bitched about it at the time. Please tell me that NFL executives watch a guy gain a first down with his legs and say "fuck, we can't have that!".
I agree with you, but Daniels is different than Fields. Fields is pretty damn bad throwing the ball. 59% as a Rookie, 60 and 61% the next year. That won't cut it. He's up around 66% this year, but in very limited action, and when he is in now? Teams are obviously playing the run. As a starter he had three of six games were he threw for under 135 yards! Only one out of six did he throw for more than two TDs, and that was a loss to the Cowboys were he averaged 4.8 yards per attempt. He fumbled six times. The Steelers only lost one of those, but fumbles, even when recovered can be drive killers. Look at how much we struggled this year when behind the sticks.
I don't think Fields is a viable option, but I REALLY don't think he is an option with Grubb as the OC. But, what about Sam Darnold? My fear is that with JJ's injury, the Vikings are going to see what is going on in Atlanta and Franchise Tag Darnold knowing that JJ can sit behind and watch him, at least for next year.
That is where I am intrigued by Cam Ward. He completed 67% of his passes this year. In 13 games he gained almost 350 yards on average per game.
4,313 yards passing and a career high 204 rushing. Remember, the QB loses rushing yards when he is sacked in college. I remember him being very elusive against the Dawgs, extending plays both to throw it down field and scramble for positive yards. I know you don't like the fact that he sat the second half of the Bowl game, but maybe some execs will agree with you and he will fall to us? He is far more NFL ready that Anthony Richardson, IMO...and probably Drake Maye. The one good think about NIL and transfer portal is these QBs are getting a ton of reps before coming to the NFL now. That is one thing that blows me away about Richardson. Could he really not get NIL money to make it worth his while to stay in school and grow as a passer?
Re: Next Franchise QB
Yes Geno can run, but tries to avoid it. He usually has more rushing yards on his stat line than I remember though. Both by game and season.Michael K. wrote: ↑Mon Dec 30, 2024 5:10 pmIt seems to me that Geno had the ability to move around more than he did. Obviously not Lamar, not Daniels, and not even Fields. It's probably true Fields is not the thrower Daniels is at this point. Can he improve on that? IDK. Jalen Hurtz and Josh Allen have.
It really doesn't matter how many yards a QB throws for if they win the game. Simplistic, but true. Russ made a pedestrian offense work.
Cam Ward would seem to be a better fit for Grubb, if Grubb isn't getting fired. So would Shedeur, who played in his bowl game, BTW.
I like Darnold, but I fear he would just be more expensive and not able to win more games than Geno.

Just in general. Last week? I get. I feel there were several times during the year he could have used his legs and didn't.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Tue Dec 31, 2024 5:18 amThis last game? Re: Next Franchise QB
Forgot about Fields, see where he's rated the number one QB going into free agency. He's going to be looking for more than a one year contract, that's going to be what drives the competition

Re: Next Franchise QB
Tough call, IMO. I have never been a Fields fan, so I feel it would be trading one QB with some major flaws for another with some major flaws. Geno is pretty damn accurate, until he decided to throw picks. Very strange. So was Sam Darnold though, and somehow? They win anyway. In narrow wins over Jacksonville and Indy back in November, Darnold threw five INTs and fumbled once. That gave him at that point, game 9, 7 INTs and 3 fumbles...10 total. The "word" is after that? He made improvements. In the 7 games since he has 5 INTs and 5 fumbles. Another 10, but in fewer games. He has actually been looser with the football.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Tue Dec 31, 2024 12:38 pmForgot about Fields, see where he's rated the number one QB going into free agency. The Vikings are better equipped to over come his shortcomings. I don't know if that is play calling, talent, luck...or all of the above. But I am not sure there is a QB available that takes us from a WC team at 9 or 10 Wins, to winning the Division and potentially going on a long run. It would require a trade up in the draft, and I think most of the guys last year are better than what is available this year. Hell, I laughed at the Broncos for taking Nix, and they have turned things around. It's amazing what a QB can do in a well coached offense when they just do what they are told.
I find it curious how often teams are talked about, and the poor to average play of their O Line is brought up. We keep thinking someday we'll have a good O Line. I'm not sure very many of those exist anymore. We may need a QB that can adapt to what he has. Those guys are locked up by teams that are playoff contenders. It's about the QB, and Fields, Darnold, Geno? Not leading this team to a deep playoff run.

I see nothing wrong with a 3-year contract for $12-13M a year... no guarantee in year 3.
He's 25. 1 year old than 2x QB's drafted in the 1st round last year. Fill out the roster w. the saved cash.

Corbin smith lays it out. Seems to agree with Sibelius. It should be about addressing the OC and offensive line before dealing with a new QB
