Re: Possible good Geno news.
Fields isn't signing a rookie style deal, and Geno isn't playing for less than he makes now, unless it comes with some series guarantees on an extension. I think they have to extend him or let it ride. Just not a great situation right now, as there aren't any better options available in FA or the Draft. Sounds like they want to win this year, and that basically means giving Geno what he wants, or keeping him on a one year and hope that works out. Seems to be a bad idea. He either has a good year and then we have to over pay, has a mediocre year, we miss the playoffs by a game or so and we are right back to square one, or he has a shitty year and we lose a ton of games and end up rebuilding but not trying to develop a replacement...and are again right back here again next year.

I think that's the biggest obstacle. He's still their best option.Michael K. wrote: ↑Tue Feb 25, 2025 4:38 pmJust not a great situation right now, as there aren't any better options available in FA or the Draft.
Things will continue to prove interesting with the new regime, all the new assistants and specialists and no real solution to the QB situation.

Seahawks GM John Schneider says team will meet with Geno Smith’s agents this week to begin talks on an extension. Says there is no deadline but says Smith is “our guy.”

Is it a given that they would have to backload the contract if they extend him? If so, then they have to really go for it now, none of this half-assed approach of the last 10 years. Cut or renegotiate Jones, Fant, and Lockett since they now all play at a backup level for starter money. Then use that money along with what can be deferred from Geno's cap hit and sign some competent (or even good) vets at positions of need (OG, TE, NT, CB, WR, LB). Of course, John would rather slam a pitcher of Tobasco sauce then pay an interior OL so they'll have to draft there instead.Michael K. wrote: ↑Tue Feb 25, 2025 4:38 pmFields isn't signing a rookie style deal, and Geno isn't playing for less than he makes now, unless it comes with some series guarantees on an extension. Yuck.
How many 35 year old QB's who sucked beyond all comprehension their first 10 years in the league magically figure it out and lead their team to a Super Bowl? Gotta be 0.
The only QB's over 35 to win a Super Bowl since 1990 are Tom Brady, John Elway, and Peyton Manning.
But ya, lets hand him $40 million a year.

Sucked for 10 years? He only got significant playing time in his first two seasons, then he sat for 6 years and learned behind vets like Ryan Fitzpatrick, Eli Manning, Phillip Rivers and Russell Wilson. Given that he was elite in college, wouldn't it be reasonable to assume he was in a bad situation in NY and/or needed some time to absorb the pro game?

Unless you believe Geno really is "our guy" (as Schneider said), backloading the cap hit is the main reason for extending him.
The pundits swear the 24 million 2025 cap hit, if you don't extend, is prohibitive.

Not sure you can point out many reclamation projects who figure it out for one season at 33... flounder... and then lead a team to anything significant past the age of 35.Sibelius Hindemith wrote: ↑Tue Feb 25, 2025 11:32 pmSucked for 10 years? Paying the guy $40 million at his age will lead this team nowhere. 9-8 hoping for a wild card birth and a first round exit is about all you're going to get with Geno Smith. But hey, we do love mediocre football around these parts.

Two Key words are in red.
“No. He’s got another year,” Schneider said. “But we expect him to be our guy, but we want to do what’s right, too.”
Schneider said he didn’t want to get into the specifics of the conversations
Asked a question that referenced Smith saying he feels like he’s a top-10 quarterback and wants to be paid as such, Schneider seemed to confirm that remains Smith’s goal.
“We’ve had great conversations with him, but obviously he’s confident and that’s the way he rolls,” Schneider said.
