Re: Seahawks' Free Agent Tracker
I have liked the last couple of drafts. Some day I'll deep dive into any lineman we might have passed on, but I haven't walked away from a draft shaking my head since we took Brooks in the first round, that I can recall. But you can't draft Brooks in the first and you can't draft Penny in the first. Just mind numbing misses. You can't draft LJ Collier in the first, that one was pathetic.Gametime wrote: ↑Mon Mar 24, 2025 5:05 amJohn is a nice guy. Gives good interviews. But, his last 6-8 years leaves a lot to be desired. His ego on his process just won’t let him change on the oline. And look where it has gotten the team. How long has it been since we were relevant? We are not going to be real good anytime soon. Sadseattlefan-daBronx wrote: ↑Mon Mar 24, 2025 12:50 amJohn sucks at drafting, developing, and retaining O-linemen.
We've been screaming for trench help for years.
They better draft the Texas guards for Christ sake.
Tell me a lineman you wanted to stick the franchise tag on since Hutchinson???
But as of late? If you aren't going to hit on Lineman in the draft you need to sign something besides scraps. His ego won't allow him to switch gears. It's like the Mariners with their bullshit "we draft, develop and trade". Well, it's gotten you one playoff appearance in 23 years. MAYBE it's time to reevaluate? Nope. Not Seattle teams. And why? Because they don't give a shit. Being mostly competitive is all they need because that is all that is demanded. The Seahawk fans that started selling their tickets? Who can blame them? But did this organization take that as a hint? Nope, doubled down on his bullshit philosophy that you can't sign Free Agent O Lineman.

Here's an article from fieldgulls that gets into some of the stuff I've brought up in terms of the Oline. It argues the Seahawks have followed a draft, develop, retain model, except they haven't completed it with the retain part. That's been my complaint. They let lineman walk and then replace them with the one year five million dollars FA. Its like the josh Jones signing.
You really have another collection of drafted linemen, I think that's why they aren't aggressively spending money on upgrades, but will they actually develop and retain them? I believe they have already declined Cross's fifth year option. So it seems like the same strategy, draft, develop, let them walk.

Its an interesting article, should take a look at it

Schneider also said that he received a stat that since 2010, the year he became GM, the Seahawks have drafted the third-most offensive linemen in the NFL and have had the third-most money spent by other teams for OL originally drafted by the Seahawks. I’m not sure about either figure, but the OL drafted was actually number one in 2017 so it may be accurate. They’ve let Russell Okung, James Carpenter, J.R. Sweezy, and Damien Lewis all notably walk in free agency. Among Schneider’s OL draft picks, only Justin Britt has ever been extended beyond his rookie deal.
Beyond the mixed results (putting it kindly) in terms of drafting linemen, the other big problem for the Seahawks is they’ve had a terrible habit of neither retaining their best linemen nor adequately replacing them in the immediate. Russell Okung walked and Bradley Sowell was the Day 1 starter at left tackle in 2016. Max Unger, a Tim Ruskell draft pick inherited by Schneider, was traded for Jimmy Graham and Drew Nowak was his immediate successor. Carpenter walked and Justin Britt was moved to left guard to absolutely terrible results.
JS has stated he feels cohesion is more important than talent and yet they refuse to address it.It is puzzling to the point of alarming how infrequently the Seahawks have been willing to retain their own offensive line talent, yet have had no issue rubber-stamping contract extensions on the defensive side of the ball at all three levels. The continuity (or lack thereof) on the OL has been close to non-existent while “patching” holes with one-year contracts for the likes of Luke Joeckel, Laken Tomlinson, Austin Blythe, etc. It’s a formula that has objectively not worked and yet it’s been the go-to move without fail
They do with other parts of the team, the defensive line but not the Oline."I think cohesion is really... when I look at offensive lines, and the really good offensive lines that I have been around, cohesion and being able to play together moreso than the pure talent of a guy," said Schneider at the Combine, "that is really quick or super flexible or rates specifically in an athletic manner.
"So to me it's about finding that right combination and having those guys who are smart and tough and reliable enough to work with coach [Tom] Cable and just work as a group in unison and be able to work with all of the adiustments that are coming and the blitzes and the adjustments in the running game.''

Looks like we'll be seeing a couple of wide receivers in the draft, but mostly interior linemen. I would consider us lucky to get at least one interior lineman out of this draft to bolster the O-Line.

Yeah, he has been whining for years about other teams over paying for O Lineman. Yet? Other teams have far better O Lines. Weird.

Most boring, yawner signing yet:
]Minor NFL Transactions: 3/25/25

Seattle Seahawks
Signed: WR Steven Sims
Sims has journeyed throughout the NFL in his six-year career, playing for four teams over that time. While he made moderate receiving contributions during his early years in the league, Sims has mostly functioned as an option in the return game for the teams he’s played with.
