What I meant was, 'Do you need to hire an OC as your head coach?' Or could you hire a DC as a head coach and still have a successful offense?
As I said, it sure seems to me that it is easier to have both, if the Head guy is an offensive mind. See OC's for Pete Carroll, Bill Belichick, Mike Vrabel, Mike Tomlin...Hell, even until recently John Harbaugh. It is highly possible I am missing examples one direction or the other, but not that long ago I broke down the list of HCs, how many were offensive minds versus the other way around. Not only were there WAY more offensive guys that made the playoffs, almost NON of the teams that made the playoffs had hired retreads. I believe it was just Reid and Bowles. The rest of the coaches had ONE HCing job in the NFL, and it was with their current team.

I guess Campbell is a defensive oriented guy, and he seems to have done a pretty good job of attracting and offensive coordinator. But there are sure a lot more examples the other way around. So, Mike Vrabel's offenses have been dogshit, but lets hire him? Dan Quinn coached a defense that just got run off the field at home against the Packers, but let's hire him. I don't get it. Two retreads out of fourteen, but we want a retread. Very few examples of defensive minded coaches having success on offense, but let's hire a defensive guy. Why fire Pete if we were going to hire Pete 2.0?

Quinn took the Falcons to the SB so he must have had a successful offense didn't he?
Yep, and check out who is OC was. I'll give you a hint, he is a very successful head coach now, and the Falcons offense has never been the same.

Because defensive coordinators are always scheming to counter offenses, wouldn't that provide them a certain advantage when it comes to exploiting defenses? I mean, who knows the defense better than a DC? So who would know better how to exploit a defense?

Of course, other factors come into play. You also need a guy who coaches to the players' strengths, who isn't completely stubborn and is willing to adapt. But if you hire an open-minded, aggressive defensive minded coach who in turn hires a good offensive coordinator, it could be a pretty convincing formula for success.

All I'm saying is that I don't think you don't need to hire an OC exclusively as head coach to have success on the offensive side of the ball.

But I could be wrong.

I don't disagree with you, but hiring another defensive minded coach wouldn't necessarily translate to Pete 2.0.

I'll take a shot, the increasing importance of the passing game could be swinging the OC as being the more popular coordinator to turn to for a HC

It's hard to know, Donn. Lots of factors at play.

Callahan named Titans Head Coach
Weird that his name was NEVER mentioned prior to this.
Because he wasn’t the primary play-caller with the Cincinnati Bengals, and because the offense he ran was loaded talent-wise, Callahan flew under the radar over the past few years. But the level of respect he has among his peers (and as we wrote in the takeaways), including his boss, is obvious, and a lot of folks are nodding at Tennessee’s decision to hire Callahan,

Evidence suggests otherwise. Besides Campbell, tell me a defensive minded coach that has an explosive creative offense who the OC seems to be making a name for himself? I am not saying there are non, but the research I did a few weeks ago when Pete was let go? I sure didn't find many.

You keep giving what ifs. Sure, it COULD happen. Look at the actual data. Name the last OC for Seattle or New England that blew the doors off everyone and ended up being on the short list or any list as a HC? Joshy Boy? Bevell? Waldren took another OC job. I don't remember very many of the others even getting a lateral move once they left here.

Bowles offense doesn't excite me. Bill B. and Pete C.'s offensives CERTAINLY didn't excite me. Harbaugh has gone through SEVERAL different OCs. Their offense worked in the past, until the playoffs, based on Lamar's super human athleticism at QB. Sound familiar? Of course, hiring Vrabel might work. But what evidence suggests that we are going to hire a conservative defense first guy, and he is going to bring in an exciting young OC? Put yourself in the shoes of a young up and coming OC. You want to go coach for the next Bill B. or Pete C.? I wouldn't, and evidence suggests that they don't.

Doesn't sound like PC is content with his advisory role which entailed sitting by the phone waiting to see if someone would call to check and see if the the Hawks could win games in the 1st, 2nd or 3rd quarters. LOL

“I see it one way and I think I’ve got a way to fix it, and I’m not going to kind of halfway fix it. I’m trying to fix it so it’s perfect,” Carroll said. “So I’ve got real precise and specific thoughts, and they may not see it that way. They may not agree with it, they may not see that that’s the right answer, or that’s not the answer that makes them feel good. The difficult part is if it’s really hard because they’re not football people. They’re not coaches. So to get to the real details of it, it’s really difficult for other people.”
Every time I read that I want to die. Again, how many NFL owners are "football people"? Second? How many years in a row do we have to lose the same fucking way before someone tells the guy...this aint working!?

1. Horrible Clock Management
2. Incredibley unimaginative offense
3. A defense that is so afraid of the big play it makes no plays and gives up third down conversions like candy at Halloween
4. Bad penalties
5. Shitty on Third down, worse in the Red Zone.

Maybe not all five of those things have been staples since we last won anything after the WC round of the playoffs, but it sure seems that way. He is absolutley delusional if he thinks he had ZERO opportunity to fix this. I am actually shocked that the same guy that admitted that halfway through the season he changed a defense that was playing pretty well because he was afraid of the big play. That defense COLLAPSED, and he thinks HE should be the guy deciding how to fix what's broke?

The guy is more likely to break what don't need fixing. Did the same thing to the offense in 2020. Again, go back and look at Pete's record after the 6 and 1 start that he wasn't comfortable with. He decided we needed to change an offense that was setting records. 30 and 33 which includes 0 and 2 in the playoffs. That is how we have been since he decided he wasn't comfortable with 6 and 1.

Yep, he had no opportunity to fix it and the only reason he isn't getting more chances is the dumb asses that fired him aren't football guys.
