The Leonard Williams trade was a mistake and JS compounded it by overpaying to keep him. Apparently he learned nothing from the Adams saga. Dremont Jones was another huge overpay.

Here's critique from a gm ranking article, he's tenth. Seems kinda accurate to me actually. That and giving a turd pile of an offensive line to macdonald to work with.
https://www.nbcsports.com/fantasy/footb ... l-32-teamsSchneider is just now stepping out of the ol’ ball coach’s shadow. He is doing so by spending money on defense and biding his time on offense. With defensive-minded head coach Mike Macdonald arriving as part of the league’s new guard, Schneider gave him Leonard Williams, Rayshawn Jenkins, Tyrel Dodson and Jerome Baker in free agency. With the roster just a little too good to blow it up and move on from Geno Smith, Schneider is hoping Smith can split the difference between his renaissance 2022 and quieter 2023, while Macdonald returns some boom to the legion on defense. It’s not a bad plan, but it’s only temporary. It’s also the kind of stop-gap approach that could end up creating a vacuum for the hot-shot young coach to step into. Schneider’s big post-Carroll chance is probably a year-to-year proposition. He will have reasonably good odds of success if Macdonald carries over his schematic success from Baltimore

I could have sworn I just saw Baldinger or someone on X saying and showing that Leonard is actually playing well...Sibelius Hindemith wrote: ↑Wed Oct 16, 2024 6:30 amThe Leonard Williams trade was a mistake and JS compounded it by overpaying to keep him. But is the roster construction appropriate, the focus continues to be on the defense which continues to suck

Yeah he's still an above average DT but at 30 he's on the downside of his career and they signed him for top 10 DT money. His cap hits in '25 and '26 are $30m and $25m. And JS traded for him in the first place because he was fooled by a good start in 2023 against weak competition into thinking they were close to being competitive for a deep playoff run. I think the money would have been better spent elsewhere like O line, and they could have used that 2nd rounder they gave up for him on D line as well.trharder wrote: ↑Wed Oct 16, 2024 1:19 pmI could have sworn I just saw Baldinger or someone on X saying and showing that Leonard is actually playing well...Sibelius Hindemith wrote: ↑Wed Oct 16, 2024 6:30 amThe Leonard Williams trade was a mistake and JS compounded it by overpaying to keep him. The main reason besides coaching for optimism was that the were adding an elite DT talent from the draft and getting their best Edge/OLB back from injury. Those two being injured (along with losing Wagner and Brooks) has left them with a dearth of talent up front.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Wed Oct 16, 2024 1:34 pmBut is the roster construction appropriate, the focus continues to be on the defense which continues to suck

Not sure losing Wagner and Brooks has hurt us. Our LBs haven't exactly been healthy either. It's the NFL, no one plays anymore. The injury reports are insane. Is Murphy ever gonna play again? Nwosu?
It was inconvenient when they were missing for Detroit, but it's starting to become habitual.

Imagine if the would have spent that on good Oline men instead.Sibelius Hindemith wrote: ↑Wed Oct 16, 2024 6:30 amThe Leonard Williams trade was a mistake and JS compounded it by overpaying to keep him. Apparently he learned nothing from the Adams saga. Dremont Jones was another huge overpay.

No argument. I was just surprised to hear he wasn't sucking along with the rest of the defense.Sibelius Hindemith wrote: ↑Wed Oct 16, 2024 3:45 pmYeah he's still an above average DT but at 30 he's on the downside of his career and they signed him for top 10 DT money. From an interview a few weeks ago. This is Schneider's roster and he likes it, he built it. I think you see it with how it's being handled now that Pete is out of the picture
When host Bob Stelton asked how much his role had changed without Carroll, who had final say over personnel decisions, Schneider insists nothing has changed.
“It’s exactly the same,” Schneider said. “Pete was amazing in terms of—he could have been that guy that put his foot down and was like, ‘Contractually, at the end of the day I have final say here.’
“He never said, ‘Hey, we’re not doing this or we’re going to do this.’ It was more along the lines of, I could tell he didn’t feel good about a trade or an acquisition or whatever. I could feel that, so why would we force that and why head down that road? But, yeah, it hasn’t changed in that regard.”
