Rams trade for Chiefs CB Trent McDuffie in blockbuster deal

Les Snead said he would take a more aggressive approach to this offseason if quarterback Matthew Stafford returned to the Rams for another season. And with a week still to go until free agency opens, the Rams’ general manager made his first big move of the spring Wednesday.

The Rams are trading for Chiefs All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie, sending the No. 29 pick in this year’s NFL draft as well as 2026 fifth- and sixth-round picks and a 2027 third-rounder, according to multiple media reports.

In four NFL seasons, McDuffie has been named to one All-Pro first team and a second team. The former first-round pick has three interceptions and 34 pass breakups in his career, as well as 5.5 sacks and eight forced fumbles.

McDuffie, 25, fills a major need for the Rams, who have three cornerbacks entering free agency and a fourth in Darious Williams who could be a release candidate this spring. But McDuffie also represents a serious upgrade in talent at the position, with an ability to line up outside or at the slot depending on matchups.

“We’re probably further ahead than the last time we chatted,” Snead said Tuesday about the Rams’ plans for the cornerback position. “Working through maybe players whose contracts are expiring in the league this year or maybe going to get cut.”

McDuffie, a former St. John Bosco standout, is entering the final year of his rookie contract but is expected to sign a long-term extension with the Rams, according to reports.

Despite the four draft picks sent out in the exchange, the Rams still have seven picks in the 2026 draft, including the Falcons’ first-round selection at No. 13 overall.

After researching him, I'm skeptical he's the key ingredient to beating the Seahawks.

Sometimes I think the amount of worry over the future is hilarious. The Seahawks were worried about the future for years....the Rams have gone all in. We have the same number of Rings in that time, but the Rams actually have fewer losing seasons. Seahawk fans have been pointing to the Rams demise since they beat the Bengals because they over paid here and there. Crazy how that overpayment hasn't really hit them yet. I guess it's further down the road?

Much like the Rangers and Dodgers in baseball...I doubt the Rams give a shit if they win a Ring next season or the one after. Personally? I agree that it seems like a lot. But this seems like a pretty good sign that they think they can bring back the core of the team that was a bounce here or there from the #1 seed this year.

The Rams are a well built team, no question. And they have a solid coach. But you're right, they've somehow managed to spend a lot of money and are still competitive. That will likely change once Stafford is gone. But you're right... when does that overpayment hit them?

Which was my point. Seattle baseball fans, in a world with no salary cap? Even concern themselves with salaries, and if something was an over pay. Do all fan bases do this? Crazy shit in my opinion. The demise of the Rams has been rumored since long before they won their Ring. This place has talked about them overpaying and being doomed since around 2019!

Since they went 11 and 5 and lost in the WC round in 2017? They have had ONE single losing season. And that was an injury riddled 5 and 12 year in 2022.

In that Span they are 92 and 57. Have been to the playoffs in seven of those 9 years, won the West 4 times, been to the Super Bowl twice and have one Ring. I don't know that we have had a 9 year run like that ever, and we like to pretend like they are the ones that are always mortgaging the future and we are built for the long haul. It's silly.

Made two All Pro teams. Would you rather have the guy that gets thrown all all the time so gets a few more INTs? I find it very interesting that a guy that doesn't put up the stats gets the votes for All Pro. You just listed the stats, and is why he doesn't make Pro Bowls, which is nothing more than a popularity contest.

Again, it is a lot of Capital, but you have to spend if you want quality. I just find it funny that the Rams are always that team that is going to have this all catch up with, and then they never do, but people keep saying it. If this guy takes them that one step further? If salary caps keep going up and up and up, which there is no reason not to believe will happen? Why does it matter?

We don't have many draft picks this year. Would you rather have those picks back or the Super Bowl trophy we just won? The Rams are trying to win now, and they just keep winning now, even though all Seahawk fans believe that some day it'll catch up with them. I wonder how old I'll be when that happens? Saying "they'll be in trouble when Stafford leaves" is even funnier. Name a team that got better when the League MVP left!

So, trying to win now WHILE they have Stafford? Seems pretty logical to me.
