OT Record Mile Time

Heard something on the radio that blew my mind this morning so I had to do some math. and its true.

The world record for the Mile was broken recently by Josh Kerr from the UK with a time of 3:42.66. The mind blowing thing is that is the equivalent of running 44 consecutive 40 yard dashes at 5.06 seconds each.

To put that into perspective. Tom Brady ran a 5.28 40 at the combine which means if he was able to sprint full speed for a mile he would still finish 10 seconds behind Kerr. Philip Rivers, Eli Manning and Matt Ryan were all slower than a 5.06 as well. Of course the majority of Offensive linemen and D-tackles are over 5 seconds, and there was even a tight end who ran a 5.19 in 2023 and still got drafted.
I haven't ran a 40 since high school when I was like a 4.7. I guarantee you I'd be well over 5 today
It's just mind boggling how fast a 3:42 mile is.

I ran a 4.8 in HS, and blew my hammy at about 38 yards! LOL. That is fricking crazy shit.

I hated the forty. I would be ahead of everyone at twenty yards, and then? The reason I was a TE and not a WR showed up and I was behind many!

That would be the case if you had to stop and start every 40 yards but if you had been timed running 40 yards at top speed your time would be under 4 seconds which would then extrapolate to a sub-3-minute mlle.

Perhaps Captain was taking that into consideration, but to me the question that puts things into perspective (if you can answer it) is how far could you run at world record mile pace without collapsing?

It's a 14 sec pace for 100 meters and a 56 sec pace for one lap. Most of us could do the former. If i had ever attempted the latter i probably would have collapsed, but my cardio was never too good.

As I recall, I couldn't run a sub 7 minute mile in high school lol.

I never ran track but did a lot of distance running for conditioning for wrestling. I think I got down to about a 6 minute mile at one point which means I would have been lapped by track milers.

Wrestlers are a different breed man. I thought basketball was hard. We ran lines for 20 minutes. Then had to run outs, which was a timed line you had to get under a number. Then we shot free throws for the number of Sweet 16s we had to run. One time that number was 9, give or take. It varied later on based on how many free throws you made when you got to challenge. We only had 30 minutes of practice left by the time that was all over that day. It is still a horror story guys on that team tell. Two guys were sick the next day....I figured their bodies just shut down.

Those Football and Basketball practice horror stories I told paled in comparison to the wrestling stories I heard!

Didn't that not let guys drink water on scorching hot days back in the day....Holy Hell. Insanity!
