NFL 100 - Top ten QBs

Post by Oso Dorado » Mon Nov 25, 2019 3:06 pm

After the release of the 12 RBs for the NFL top 100, I see that they are going with 10 QBs and 10 WRs in the list.

Who do you think makes the top 10 QBs? Keep in mind that they are spread over 100 years, not just the stats hogs of the past few decades.

What I've started with is:

Y.A. Tittle
Sammy Baugh
Johnny Unitas
Joe Montana
Tom Brady

Maybes....Norm van Brocklin, Roman Gabriel, Fran Tarkenton, Brett Favre.

I was looking at some stats in the 30's. In 1934, Arnier Herber led the league with 34 yards passing on 37 attempts. It was a different game then. Tough to compare....

Yeah, I don't think a QB would stay on the field long these days with less than a yard per attempt. lol

The list is going to be more modern-heavy due to the increase in the passing game so I think the only old-timers are going to be definitely Unitas and Otto Graham, and probably Bart Starr. I can't see any of the other old-timers ('60s and before) standing out, even among their peers.

The other seven I think will be definitely Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Brett Favre, Joe Montana, and John Elway, probably Drew Brees, and then probably Dan Marino being the sole rep from the '70s/'80s/'90s. The only other QB from those three decades with a shot is Roger Staubach.

Who were the 12 RBs?
Earl Campbell
Jim Brown
Earl "Dutch" Clark
Eric Dickerson
Lenny Moore
Marion Motley
Walter Payton
Barry Sanders
Gale Sayers
O.J. Simpson
Emmitt Smith
Steve Van Buren

Note that no one whose career started after 2000 is included. I suspect a similar emphasis in the QBs, with a couple of old timers getting in.

Earl "Dutch" Clark probably shouldn't be on the list he coached both football and basketball College and pro but had losing records in each. His NFL career:
Career NFL statistics position QB
TD–INT: 11–26
Passing yards: 1,507
Rushing yards: 2,772
Rushing touchdowns: 36
1931-38 he did lead league 3 times and 6 all pro selections.

I get the whole rules change stuff over the years but playing up the old timers is kinda silly.

Two guys who pushed hard for the old timers are Belichick and Madden, from what I've read.

Yeah, that's like MLB having a Top 12 All-Time Home Run Team and putting Home Run Baker on the list.
