Tyler Lockett's Future

I am wondering if this draft pick means we might be nearing the end of the Lockett era. His contract is fine for this coming year but looking at 2024 and 2025, he is due to make just under 24 Million per year. I am no cap expert but it looks like they can save about 10 Million in Cap space in 2024 by releasing him. 2025 would almost be a no brainer with saving almost 17 million in cap space.

DK was doubled all year last year. I think the JSN pick was mainly for the purpose of freeing DK and Lockett from doubles. But there is a historical tread with WRs regressing significantly starting around age 30. While there are a few WRs that maintain elite well into their 30s it is actually quite uncommon. JSN can be considered an insurance policy against this too. As for the cap, savings can come from all sorts of angles and I don't think JSN was drafted based on looking at the cap a year or two down the road IMO.

yeah, there are a few factors here - 1) Tyler isn't getting any younger. He should have a few more good years left, but having an heir-apparent isn't a bad idea. 2) his contract is expensive. No reason that couldn't be restructured, though. If JSN works out, then sure we could be nearing the end, but I think the intention is to keep Tyler for a while 3) our WR3-5 SUCK. I mean, next to zero production, running wrong routes, dropping balls. They were literally making the team worse. That spot needed an upgrade in a huge way, and JSN is that huge upgrade.

What it MIGHT mean, though, is fewer 3 TE sets. We ran 3 wide something like 53% of the time last year. Compare that to 91% for the Rams. This is partly scheme, but I think there was a huge correlation to the lack of depth behind DK and Tyler.

It’s too bad Goodwin can’t stay healthy. I actually liked him. But heat, not much depth after DK and Tyler…until yesterday.

Couldn't we rework his contract somehow to lower his hit?
